Significant investment by FPP has been made

The whole thing was bizarre as far as I could tell. No signing guarantees you anything - you just hope for the best. But the manner of it was all just a bit off. It smacked of desperation to appease the fans and went against the grain of a lot of the things they'd said beforehand. A mad gamble and it's not his fault it didn't pay off.
its his fault he overpiad though..

the much maligned richard hill told him to stop bidding...he ignored him..

well no other club in this legaue has £10m to spend on that stuff..so it puts us ahead of everyone else..i think one thing mentioned is asocuts to be employed in scandinavia to find players..i doubt any rival club has that..
That depends if A) they're any good, and B) those players they scout are interested in playing for a mid table League 1 club.

I take it this sum is £10m by the way?

Absolutely.

It might not be happening at a breakneck pace, but things are happening nonetheless. Improvements almost certainly. It's essentially still a building site, but one that has grand plans that are designed to make us all happier. Is this not something we should all be saluting?
Some fair comments in the bit I deleted.

I'd like to see those plans.
you would hope the scouts will know te players are interested,
There's been plenty who haven't been.
Fingers crossed all round....we need an injection and this a massive positive. I just hope those entrusted with spending the money do a better job than what has happened with most of our spending over the last 10 years or so. The Grigg signing alone shows how easy it is to blow cash even at this humdrum level.
Well it's not going to be that kind of spending...

How far does £10m go in that respect? Genuine question as I don't know.

I'm yet to see a single improvement that actually matters in the past 18 months, so sorry if someone sticking a few quid doesn't get me jumping up out of my seat.

I'm sure you can agree there's a difference between "not jumping out of your seat" and what you've been doing on this thread. If anything you've been jumping out of your seat to try to ruin the buzz of anyone that's happy about this news.

£10m? No idea.

Some broad stroke possibilities with wild estimates on wages:

£1m could get you 100 grass-roots scouts on £10k a year each for one year.
£1m could get you 20 lower-league scouts on £50k a year each for one year.
£1m could get you 10 top scouts on £100k a year each for one year.
£1m could get you 20 data analysts and statisticians for the scouting team on £50k a year each for one year.
£1m could get you 20 data analysts, statisticians and sports scientists to work with the coaches and medical team on £50k a year each for one year.
£1m could get you 10 top youth coaches on £100k a year each for one year.
£1m could get you a load of snazzy new equipment for the academy and training facilities.
£1m could maybe buy a roof for one of the training pitches.
£1m could go on new gold shower taps for the changing rooms. Or on painting the SoL. Or on revamping the inside areas at the stadium for better access to food stalls and toilets or something. Or maybe a full array of top class first team coaches.

Obviously with the first six, you could easily also have half as many of them for twice as long for that same money, but for all we know they might be planning on investing more in this side of the club every year until the process of bringing in kids and eventually selling those kids as Premier League players starts bearing fruit. They may well be essentially investing in us as a kind of "player farm".

Just some possibilities.

If we did get them all, we would absolutely dwarf every club in League 1 and the Championship in terms of numbers of staff in those positions, and probably almost the entire Premier League too.

Our training sessions would be like those for the Russian guy that killed Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies, and our scouting network would be pretty nuts too.

I may be misremembering but I thought we were in for quite a few different strikers and were getting either turned down or quoted ridiculous sums because "we're sunderland" and then Grigg seemed to be the only possible one but we basically had our trousers pulled down by the end of it out of, as you said, desperation to get someone in.

Which is exactly one of the reasons I find too many people on this forum take a simplified view of how easy it is to run the club. I highly doubt Donald actually wanted to get a player in at the last second on such big numbers.

Or maybe they have what you don't, a sense of humour, and are in it for a good laugh.... ;)
😂 i lack in many things too numerous to mention. A sense of humour isn’t one of them. If it was I’d be supporting a different club.

is less than 10m huge investment?

For a League 1 club to spend on revamping their scouting and youth development systems? Yes mate, yes it is.
No. You assume far too much.

You have as much idea as I do regarding those things.

I'll be happy when we have a team to be happy about.

...and you'll remain angry at every piece of news out of the club until we do have a team you can be happy about?

Need to get there first.

I'm not complaining about the sum by the way (if it is indeed correct) - just so we're clear on that.

Can you send me the costings that have been published for existing scouting and academy development please mate?

Despite your concerns, (I probably even share 'some'), a terrible chairman wouldn't have secured this investment.
Doesn't today's news and the potential for much greater long term security help show that?
It is good news. But I don't trust SD to invest it wisely. I'm glad the money is being put into the academy, scouting and recruitment because that's where it's needed. But if he keeps Coton, Hill and Reid then it's pointless because all 3 should be sacked.

This could be an exciting project and we should look to people with modern views and who know the modern game rather than Donald's buddies. Donald has appointed clowns to key positions.

Aye. If we were to appoint a Director of Football this afternoon with a proven track record of success, I might take notice.
