Sunderland’s reputation as UK centre of far right is now national

The reality is Sunderland is a friendly and safe city. I've got no doubt about that.
It's got some morons but the city has all but been abandoned by politicians .......a left behind place
The guardian seems to be annoyed Sunderland voted leave (like most of the NE) but had it not been so abandoned over the years maybe things would have been different

Sunderland is a safe and friendly place for all
Of course you’re right mate, but that doesn’t fit with some people’s agenda.
That photo on referendum night will haunt the City for a generation. I know we like to declare first, but that night we should have just declared at 4am
No, you mean it haunts you.

Sunderland’s got no more or less knuckle draggers than anywhere else.
Op on his usual wind up of Sunderland being wick with nazi type fellas and is shite
I do recall him saying once Sunderland had a massive % of racists and Hartlepool was full of them also
In truth the vast majority of the country thinks nowt of Sunderland except it has a football team and Nissan is there, never mind actually knowing where the place is apart from somewhere near Newcastle

As someone who spends time looking at conspiracy theorists I frequent a site that looks at events from all over the world and I was very surprised to see this amongst all the other stuff considering the site is hosted in the USA.

The conspiracy theorist who posted it is clearly from Liverpool judging by his accent and he is basically saying that some of the people in the video are 'plants' to push an agenda or some bollocks along them lines.

This is an unedited clip of the video in question and is available on youtube.

Not exactly something as a City that we should want to be known for. If we do end up losing companies like Nissan and we end up with high unemployment rates etc I really do fear for the future of this City as being somewhere you would want to live and bring up a family. The ease in which the far right extremists infiltrated our City is pretty scary as was/is the willingness of so many local people to hero worship scum like Billy Charlton and Tommy Robinson.

Is it shite a hotbed of rightwing extremism. We've had a labour MP since I was born man .

You get stupid people in every city. It seems like some parts of the media has an agenda against Sunderland often mentioning us in regard to our Brexit vote. They conveniently dont mention that there were around 50 areas with a bigger Brexit vote than us.

Not sure why folk are having a go at MM here. It's the second such article I've seen in a major newspaper in the last few weeks, and it's obviously an embarrassing stain on our city that's going to take some work to remove.

The Guardian doesn't have an agenda mind. Whenever they do an article on owt Brexit related they usually quote either Sunderland (first to declare) or Stoke (biggest leave majority iirc).

Many of the pond life who turned up at the marches weren't even from Sunderland.

Sunderland has a small number of racists , but are outnumbered by the decent people in the city, been first to announce leaving , we have be labelled as a racist city, even though my areas voted leave with a bigger percentage.
We've been labelled racists??
Really?

By who? The Guardian. As I posted upthread, I work all over the country, Europe and the world and never once has someone mentioned Sunderland being racist or far right. Football is about the only thing that comes up regularly.

The OP is doing his usual... "sunderland is covered in racist flags", "the Echo is full of white blokes stabbing each other" and bollocks like that.

Oh I wouldn't argue that. My point is how we're being perceived.
And MM has a point as to how easily the locals were stirred up by those f***ing wankers.

Doesn't help that our local Brexit Poster Boy who was in all the papers because we were first to declare has been sent down for racial abuse.

Who hasn't the Guardian labelled as racists?

I reckon it's suspect if you haven't been included at this stage.

theres no such thing as bad publicity :)

seriously The City of Sunderland is a fine place to be. It, like the country, consists of a population of different people with different opinions. Just because it voted to leave, doesnt make it a right wing stronghold. Just as London isnt full of left wing hippies or remainers.

I see it from afar and nobody has intimated to me they think Sunderland is a hotbed of right-wing extremism. The marches never raised an eyebrow on the south coast and neither did the Charlton trial.

The whole thing has probably been blown up out proportion on here cos it's so close to home.

Mate I have a business in Sunderland, the last thing I want it to be know for is being full of racists and the home of the far right. Sadly that’s what it is becoming known for.
I agree with you but people from Sunderland are blinded by their loyalty. I mentioned not being able to have business guests stay in the city and someone said what's wrong with the Hilton next to the Stadium. As if the idea of taking them to the colliery tavern or the wheatsheaf was an option to impress!?!??! Or even getting a taxi into the city centre, where we have spoons, Jospehs, Sinatras?? We've got a handful of pubs and restaurants which are average, nothing more.

Some of the other managers at work said let's have the next team meeting near me as most are down south. The idea of suggesting Sunderland is just a non-starter but a majority of people from Sunderland don't think it's that bad.

I think it's because a lot rarely leave the place. I remember at the check-a-trade final, seeing a big line of Sunderland fans lined up at the tube ticket machines buying tickets with their debit cards and thinking how out of touch we are.
