I read an opinion piece recently (but I can’t find it now) that basically said Scotland needed to look at how Ireland had changed their setup if they wanted to get back to being a successful rugby nation. Watching this it’s hard to disagree with it.

would any team in the world give Japan a game here? They're absolutely rampant.
In an open game on this form they could take anyone on.

But a savvy team would just deny them that open game which would change the picture a lot.

My worry for England playing them would be that they would see their open play as a gauntlet that they would try and match. In which case I wouldnt be so sure they could do it.

They've played the most fluid penetrating rugby bar none this WC, that's indisputable. If you were watching the All Blacks playing like this you woodnt consider it anything less than usual AB excellence.

I think both Scotland and Englands sporting structure for pretty much all of its national teams outside the Olympics is too mired in class and a British know it all mentality (as seen in most British football managers of a certain generation) to do as well with its resources as countries removed from those issues.

Imagine giving even Japans football team the resources England's has, I'm positive it would be far better in the space of a generation.

Do you really think it's just about throwing money at it - are you seriously saying Japan would have the greater raw materials (players)?

Finished bottom in 2015 6 nations
2016 6 nations wasn’t much better apart from beating France

townsend appointed 2017

it’s not just on the politics forum then that you clearly know nothing?
He left with a 53% win rate (19 wins from 36 games) which is the most successful coach of the professional era and the most successful since Sir Ian, between 88-93. Very unlucky not to make the world cup semi final 4 year ago. Won 3 games in 2017 6 nations as well. Just don't think they have progressed as well. Still hope they somehow manage to pull this out of the bag
