Being late on the 1st day of a new job.

Morning of my first job I went for the bus to find that they were on strike. I ran to the train station - about 2 miles - got the train and got into town at about 8.50am. I then had to run down Fawcett Street and across the Wearmouth Bridge and then another mile or so. I ran in to entrance and up the stairs - it was about 9.05. As I got to the top of the stairs my new boss was standing at the top. I looked at him expecting to be told to turn around and go home. Instead he said, "Good morning, welcome and I have ordered you a cup of coffee with 2 sugars. Is that OK?". That was first day of work after school and where was it? Sunderland AFC!

I don't actually have a start time. I've got to do 7.5 hrs a day and I guess there is a general understanding I should be there around core business hours but that's it. Once the work is getting done it's not questioned.

'Broken window theory'. Our place rattle on about it all the time. Don't fix one broken window, soon there will be two, then everyone will think broken windows don't matter etc.

The theory is very true. Rudy Giuliani used it when he was Mayor of New York to influence his and the top police officer of NYPDs approach to policing.

I don't know if he's ever late other than that first day. But he just can't do simple tasks.

The point I'm making, is that being late on the 1st day should have set the alarm bells off.
Ok so in that case the lad is just incompetent and this role is clearly not for him. Or give him a few month to sort himself out? Otherwise, out on his ear me lad.

Maybe I'm old school but I can't abide lateness

Woman where I work is late every day and when it was brought up the management just glossed over it. The other week she apparently got to the office ten minutes early and stood outside for 15 minutes so she was still late!
people like this drive me mad....or if they're late, sit down for 20mins, then nip off for a tab.......then had the cheek to mention that I was on here alot....I told her to get fucked via my boss..!

It happens, I doubt anyone is intentionally late on their first day.

If it continues to happen, then there's an issue.

Going to do an Elevenerife on you here mate. My 1st IT job after four years at Uni and I was late on my 1st day. Genuinely alarm never went off. I was absolutely mortified.

But the boss gave me the benefit of the doubt (laughed about it) and it all worked out fine. She actually cried when I handed my notice in 18 months later.

I made a lass at work cry this week... (i was trying to be nice for once!)

#awkward

She might be depressed mate.

Sometimes i'll sit in the car for ages because I can barely take going into work. Luckily I have fairly flexible hours and don't mind staying back after everyone is gone, in fact it's when i'm most productive.
