Trevor Bayliss appreciation thread

He’s clearly marmite with the public in general and some of his interviews are random as hell

But it’s clearly to see that the players liked him, Cook’s comments in the Sunday Times today were overwhelmingly positive

It’s always difficult to see what a coach does in cricket, given they have limited selection roles, but he will be remembered as the bloke who transformed us in the white ball game. we were dreadful. A shambles. And then magnificent

Fair play

I don't think the test team has fulfilled anything like its potential under him. It's a good team, certainly - he's never lost a home series, after all. But I don't think it's fulfilled the promise of its talent and the way Denly and Burns have played this series, against a very talented attack, makes you wonder if we could have been a better side if they'd changed tack.

Having said that, I don't think the job is doable - he just doesn't have time to get around the red ball circuit, and the job should now be split from the white ball one. He is reliant upon the selectors to help him and I think they've largely failed him throughout his time here. He can't make his captain any better, either.

What he has done with the ODI barely needs mentioning. 10/10, perfection.

He's been a good coach overall.

He's been a fantastic short format coach, won us a world Cup. Test cricket he's not so hot, but we still had some good wins under him, e.g. SA and SL away. Crap at Ashes.

Based onwhat?

Been at a lot of England matches in the last 4 years and he is very popular.

He's been a great coach

Excellent one day coach but a real mixed bag at test level. Has presided over some excellent victories and also some of the most embarrassing performances in our history. Time is right to move on for both parties.

Every time I've seen him speak I think 'what a nice guy' and must be a pleasure to work with.

Clearly his issue was lack of knowledge of County Cricket but I don't think that was a deal breaker and at the end of the day he isn't a one man band, he'd have had plenty of support from people who did know CC.

Nonetheless time for the coaching role to be split I reckon.

Bayliss failed at the Test match format for England.

Tbf, his first series was a victorious Ashes campaign ;)

This, for me.

Clearly a very, very likable bloke.

Amazing white ball coach. The transformation from WC to WC has been remarkable - Farbs started it v NZ, and Bayliss took it to another stratosphere.

But, one or two performances aside, awful in red ball. Let down by selectors and a governing body who prioritised the white ball yes, but never got the best out of a talented group of players.
Also - the collapses. 4 times in a session we were bowled out under him.

Definitely not mourning his departure as far as Test cricket is concerned, but will always be grateful for the foundations he's put in place in the one day game

sorry but unbeaten in 4 years at home does not make you awful a test cricket like.

I am not mourning his depatrue either and looking forward to a more hands on coach for the test side, but getting too much stick,

he won an ashes like, against a very good Aussie side in 2015, there no need for the wink, why doesn't it count? we played excellent cricket

This is the guy who not only has won us the World Cup for the first time in our history, he has completely transformed the style and confidence of the team

England have without any doubt the best one day side they have ever had, and arguably are playing the most entertaining one day cricket the 50 over game has ever seen!.

In the test side, considering the personnel available especially the batting side and lack of quality spinner he has had,he has done quite well imo.

Not to mention he come across as quite a unassuming quiet guy, who seems to treat the players like adults and not fall out with anyone at all and respected by all.

Only in this country would a guy with the above by treated like marmite as the op says.

Taking everything into account Bayliss has been a very good coach imo, and deserves a lot more respect for his achievements.
