Ashes 5 test - The Oval

Stokes out cheaply and playing a bad shot, AGAIN. When he gets big runs they're usually spectacular - SA, Lords, Headingley. Other than those his overall record is as average as Bairstow's.

Stokes - 57 tests, 3500 runs @ 35, 8 centuries
Bairstow - 69 tests, 4000 runs @ 35, 6 centuries

Jonny's batting gets non-stop stick (I give him plenty) and Stokes gets virtually none.
Is it because his big scores are more headline-grabbing/matchwinning?
Is averaging 35 acceptable because he's an all-rounder?
I know that batting all-rounders tend to get more runs in the 2nd half of their careers as their bowling workload decreases a bit, but I still think Ben should be averaging mid-forties.

It's a Durham thing I'm afraid.

If we’re going off average, what’s a matter with averaging 36 as keeper, genuine question?
Nothing, if your batting in a traditional wk's position of 6/7.
Bairstow's problem is how he's being used - batting higher up and being expected to contribute bigger runs because of that.
Stokes should be 6 and Jonny 7.

Agree with that aye

Not their fault though is it?

One of the biggest problems with England's modern day players is that they don't convert enough good starts onto match defining big hundreds.
People can slag off this player and that player but they all can play but they don't do it often enough to make a score that defines the innings. I think this is the biggest task for the new coach whoever he is
