The better claim is that it was a term of abuse coined by Scottish Jacobites when the city resisted and supported George II during the Jacobite uprising of 1745.
As I said I'm not disputing other claims, some are more likely than others but there really doesn't seem to be a definitive answer and to be honest does it really matter? For generations folks of the north east have identified as Geordie no matter which team they supported, it's only since football was invented in 1992 that the mags claimed it 🤬
