Today was comparable in test match terms and I hope I’m still around for the next time in thirty odd years, as this is rare.

Sadly though mate, an awful lot of young'uns would not have seen that today, the way that we did on council telly - For me though the achievement today was greater than 81 because we were one ball away from losing for the best part of 2 hours - 81 was comfortable in comparison

I left first day at edgbaston early because my knee was killing me. But I also missed smith scoring a ton which I am really thankful for. I admire his grit but he’s the ugliest batsman I’ve seen in ages. Other than burns of course 😉
 
You know the one thing that was missing today? Richie Benaud commentating when stokes was hitting sixes and the classic, “straight into the confectionary stall and out again”

You lads that were not around in the 80s, today was comparable to Sir Beef of Loins innings and the reaction it brought to the crowd back in the day.

I don’t think I can give any more praise to Ben Stokes than that. Get your walking boots on Ben and the knighthood will be forthcoming
 
When I walked into the SoL yesterday we were 20odd for 2, and pretty much dead and buried.

When Woakes was walking back to the pavilion, we were dead and buried.

When Broad was yorked, this time we were definitely dead and buried.

It just defies believe that we won that. Denly and Root yesterday fighting to build the platform, then Stokes and Bairstow holding it together this morning, then this afternoon and everything that was.

359, you just don't chase down that. You don't score 67 in your first innings and win, you just don't. 131 years ago that anyone scored less than that in the 1st innings and won.

Still can't believe it, staggering. Cricket man, what a game.
 
Stokes has written himself into the history books today. Whether we go on to win the Ashes or not, it will be remembered for years to come. I hope it isn’t all about his innings to win the game. For all the plaudits of Archer and Broad, it was his spell of brilliant bowling in the Aussie second innings, when the wickets dried up, that even gave us any chance at all.

He grabbed that test match by the scruff of the neck with both ball and bat, and fully deserved a moment he will live off for the rest of his life.

Up there with onions in South Africa and monty and jimmy Anderson’s at Cardiff.

I love the reports that Leach’s glasses were steaming up. Straight out of dads army that and typically English

Indeed, he stood up like flintoff, botham and Willis in days gone by. One man totally taking on the aussies and would not wilt.

He is a really likeable bloke - it is like he has won a prize to play for England at cricket :lol:

Good luck to him - I hope he establishes himself properly.

No, I think that was the right shot. It was attacking, but he was trying to move his feet to the pitch of the ball. You have to break up a spinners rhythm. I was fine with the shot selection, he just didn't execute. I was fine with Archers and too tbh - he didn't have a defensive game to build on with Lyon, attack was his best option. Bairstows is a 50-50, I think probably he should have left it given it was so soon after lunch. Woakes's was awful.

Absolute claptrap that mind. People on here were arguing for equality under the law, nothing more, nothing less. Nobody wanted him banged up for serious time.

I don't think anyone who witnessed the Headingley test of 1981 ever thought that another test could ever be as dramatic as that one, and for me in 38 years, nothing has come remotely close to that game before today
The tension after Broad got out was unbearable, yet for some reason I felt all the way that Stokes could do it, providing he wasn't left stranded
It was a truly amazing game today
