Stokes was chasing nothing with 4 partners remaining though. He batted incredibly patiently. After Root went one more partnership would have done it. 6 wickets left at one point chasing 120 or so with a day and a half to bat, you chase nothing, why would you? Teams routinely reach that total with 6 wickets and that much time remaining.

I'm glad we didn't win that way because we would be deprived of one of the greatest innings in Test Cricket, but Bairstow and Buttler absolutely fucked it up by going for shots. It just so happened that a miracle happened that made it irrelevant.

Australia bowled shite with the new ball ... as soon as Lyon came on the game was up imo if you played to knock them off there was a ball with your name on it

Stokes couldn’t play Lyon until the game was up and he went off

Something noted at the times, but significant in the story of the test, was England as a whole not celebrating excessively taking wickets in the second innings, and then Sir Ben, other than a touch of the peak of his helmet, no selling the 50 and 100.

Pure focus on the job at hand.

Well, we had our day out and I had no idea of the score. A bit of ffd to move it along rather than watch in real time, but I had no idea what had happened. That was like the world cup all over again! My heart is pounding and I am typing this through tears.

What the hell happened today - Ben Stokes is just an immense cricketer. What a test match! What a sport! So glad I watched that without knowing the result as I am feeling all of the emotions I would have done had I watched it live.

And what an atmosphere - unbelievable - just incredible! Just f***ing brilliant!
