3rd Ashes Test - Headingley

The media had already penciled in 1-1 heading to OT after they found out Smith wasn't playing.

Then when England were bowled out for 67 the BBC headline read England's Ashes hopes all but gone. With pundits falling over themselves saying this is the day we lost the Ashes etc.

Then when England chase down 359, the usual OTT predictions ENGLAND HAVE MOMENTUM! CAN'T SEE ENGLAND NOT WINNING THE ASHES NOW! AUSTRALIA PSYCHOLOGICALLY WONT COMEBACK FROM THIS! 3-1!

And then I expect Australia probably to still win 1 of the last 2 tests and regain it anyway. Our press can't stop acting like idiots, one day we're invincible because we had Archer knocking Aussies over with 95mph deliveries and the next day we're the worst England side ever.

If England chase down 359 it will be the second best run chase in Test history. I’m not sure what the papers say matters tbh.

If we pull off tomorrow it only vindicates what everyone said about the batting order day one though. Very few people said they were outright shit but most people said they were stupid, impatient, embarrassing and completely lacking in application and fight. And they absolutely were, and are, having been out for less than 150 six times now in as many months.

One miraculous performance tomorrow won’t make any of that go away. If following that performance they go on to apply themselves to the degree they have today consistently? Happy days. But form suggests they won’t. On form yes they are poor with the bat at Test Cricket. That’s not a knee jerk reaction it’s one based on very straight forward evidence backed up by stats and results in afraid.

You're preaching to the converted, who has said we are a poor batting side for yonks now.

I'm digging out the bi-polar reactions that seem to occur rather frequently.

The two openers were out cheaply, again. Root and Denly both had plenty of good fortune. On another day they'd have been out for low scores. So more to do with rub of the green than grit and determination from what I saw.
Root has had his issues, but he’s still the best we have in my opinion.

Anyone who can't see he is easily out best batsman needs to watch another sport. He's batting too high and getting exposed by limited overs openers. He might as well be opening himself given how early he's coming in.
Plus the Aussies bowled extremely well imo, there was nothing in the wicket, but their bowlers give nothing at all away.

Correct. Got some very good bowlers in their ranks.

Just watched the debate.

They reminded us of the West Indies at Headingly back in 2017 chasing down 322 winning by 5 wickets.

I actually agree with the bookies here England definitely have a chance, I'd give it around 25-30%. Headingly can get very flat and 300+ scores are possible.

I get the impression England will either lose by less than 50 runs or win by no more than 3 wickets. This probably will go down to the wire.

May have saved himself from getting dropped for the next test today.

Managed to negotiate more deliveries than most. May end up replacing Roy as opener. Needs to watch the short ball though, and then stop swiping at the ball when they tempt him to drive the very next delivery.

The amount of times i have seen England in a good position overnight only to piss it away leads me to be a little cautious in displaying any optimism or hope! First session and getting through new ball are obviously crucial. Bairstow and Buttler worry me with respect to plodding and batting time. Root and Stokes can do it, not sure about them.

Have more faith on the tail to hang about than those two.

The Aussies know one early wicket will probably do it. Look at the rest of the line up. And the new ball is due too. Like yesterday it's going to need a good chunk of luck.

You just know though that if the Aussie bowlers produce some magic it'll still be about how shite we are on here.
Going to the pub around 2pm today hoping to have a test match to watch...

If you're watching cricket then it'll be looking good. New ball is the key.

Just woke up, burnt to bits still pissed pizza and kebab on the floor room stinks of sick.

Now to get a shower get dressed and head for breakfast then back for day four.

Do I honestly think we can do it? Nah. But root has stood up and been counted. My one worry is stokes with a new ball. But we play it 50 runs at a time I think that’s how il see it.

Haway England. Let’s do it.

Other than Root probably the best batsman we've got for this kind of situation imho. He can play a patient innings when he needs to, as he did in the last test at Lords.

If these two get us to 12:30 I think we might have a good shout. Cannit see Bairstow and Buttler playing a conservative innings so need these two to see out the old ball and take a bit out of the new one before they come in.

I think one of these two in need to be there at the end.

Breaking it down, it shouldn't be mission impossible. 200 runs, with seven wickets in hand, and on a day 4 pitch (not last day). The issue is its a good bowling line up against a struggling batting line up. I wish Denly hadn't gone, but you have to hold your hands up and say it was a good ball.

Yeah mate he’s a good batsman can’t argue with that one showed last night he can happily defend just hope he keeps his cool.
And I hope we drag each ball/over out for as long as we can. Try and upset the rhythm of their bowlers a bit. It's what they would do.
I’d point at someone in the crowd every ball, putting me off

 Thankfully a quiet night last night for me in prep, just on way to station now, get into Leeds for about 9.15 for a couple pints and some breakfast. Nerves be kicking in by then. Haway England

Yep. It's a test series where one test affects another. Our bowlers have had very little rest compared to theirs. Need to keep them out there.
Be over before lunch. Not the first time we've been in a good position to throw it all away

As I posted yesterday ITHICS

Can it not be good bowling or does it have to be throwing it away? Be best to get the rules decided upon before the day starts to avoid confusion.
