Basically the land on which the stadium sits is owned, through a complicated arrangement going back to King John, by the Freemen of the City and the Council.

NUFC have it on a 99 year 'peppercorn' lease which, iirc, was signed around 1972 after the club had threatened to leave town and build a stadium out at Gosforth Park.

If the club decided to leave they'd be forced to demolish the stadium, return the land to a proper state and hand it back to the owners.

The demolition costs would be huge although, I suppose, they could flog off a few of the seats and Sports Direct advertising boards :lol:
