3rd Ashes Test - Headingley

We've gone backwards as Test side with Bayliss in charge as the ODI Team has improved. Whether that is an acceptable sacrifice is for people better informed than me to decide upon but I'd suggest the case for splitting the coaching between White and Red ball is stark

This is almost our Headingley '81 moment - a talented captain out of his depth and form declining. There is an argument to bring in a Brearley type to calm the ship and be a Captain rather than a star player.

Eoin Morgan is the obvious choice - bat him at 6 or 7 and tell him to play his One Day game
OUT!

Don't think Morgan's back will hold up 5 days and we probably have enough ODI players :lol. I agree with the concept though.

Realistically what do we need to get them all out for? Anything less than 130 (chasing around 250) i think keeps us interested slightly

Is the bowling in this test that good or is the batting just atrocious from everyone bar a couple?

Yeah you are right, I wasn't thinking about his back problems.....
Are there any good/very good county captains out there that could scrap for their wicket?

A couple of years ago I'd have said Daryl Mitchell but he's regressed a bit and isn't even captaining Worcs now. Burns might be a decent shout in the longer term but currently it's sparse.

The bowling is good, in some cases VERY good but the batting is awful. Watch old clips of Gooch, Atherton or Strauss - lots of good bowling but batsmen who knew where their off stump was and batsmen prepared to leave 6 balls in a row. So what if we only score 220 in a day, it's good old fashioned test cricket
Now look at the wickets we lost today and how many of them could have left the ball....

If When we lose this Test then Root's position has become untenable. Too many batting collapses, his own form is gone and often looks lost in the field and allows the game to drift.

He's our best batsman and needs to be relieved of the captaincy to allow him to carry on in that vein

I agree but who?
