The only logic behind Root bowling surely is if he's been told it's too dark for pace. Can't see the sense in that at all.

Nope. The logic is there's no point in burning the seamers out.
True, but they're all shaking hands within the next half an hour unless something happens. The maximum any bowler can do now is 7 overs, so it's worth another go.
