2ND ASHES TEST: LORDS

FFS Jonny, man up! Every available second counts before lunch!

Noticed drinks had been taken on 26.1 overs and thought (hoped) it meant an Aussie had been smashed in the head.
Yup. Any suggestions?

Hit him in the head.

But yes I do actually. Probe away like fuck on a fourth stump line. Don’t deviate from that line, set a field accordingly and let the ball do the work. Plenty this morning has already misbehaved off the seam and off the pitch.

Bowling at his f***ing hip won’t get him out.

Well, if Jof bowls a ball like he did to Bancroft there's not a batsman alive will survive it. Maybe Bradman or peak-era Lara could have blocked it, but for mortals its unplayable. McGrath-esque: late seam down the slope, clipping middle stumps bails. At 92mph under cloud cover. If Smith gets one that good he's gone.

Trouble is the way he bowls 4th stump is often his 3rd. Reading his stats it seems his big weakness is left arm spin. We got any of them about?

McGrath never touched those speeds Archer is. Nor did he have to.

I think this is the strategy - but as Warney said, you've got to fire one in at the stumps every now and again. Or at least Archer has - that kind of pace, when he's been set-up for fifth stump is the best way to expose the obvious flaw in his unorthodox technique. Maybe even a yorker - Warne was saying not enough bowlers give him a leg-stump yorker early doors and this was something they used to do to Lara, who also got across, while he was getting his eye in too. Not averse to Woakes doing likewise, but for him he just has to keep it on good length, but then throw in a fuller one that hopefully swings.

You have to set Smith up. He's attritional, and you have to accept you must be too. You can't blast him out.
