Dylan McGeouch

If ever a footballer epitomises his manager it’s this little fraud. Negative as hell, not a single shot on target in his SAFC career from our midfield dynamo. Slow, no presence, passes backwards and sideways and stops any sort of momentum. I can totally understand why Ross, who knew him so well from Scotland was hell bent on signing him and making him one of the highest paid players this league has ever seen. A negative sick note.

I want to defend Ross but I have to agree. McGeouch will always but always chose a low risk slow pass over a medium risk fast one and that, I am afraid is our problem and the managers in a nutshell.

It's almost as if a Flannagan esc ball to their keeper or for a throw is the better option. Its staggering that the majority would prefer to lose possession than keep it.

Why is a poor centre half trying to pick a relatively hard forward pass? Quite simply because he's seeing too much of the ball, mostly due to 5 and 10 yard safe backward passes to him...

Never got the love he attracts from some on here, Leadbitter has more bite and vision so has to play instead of him, also his set piece taking is missed when he isn't playing, Power in if Grant isn't available and McGeoch third choice, he brings nothing to the table especially when he is as wasteful and soft as he was yesterday, when he was being lauded last week he did very little to actually impact the game in a positive way, he's basically Tommy Miller.

Yep. I'm prone to hipster tactics beard scratching myself, so this is a bit people in glass houses. But the lauding of this fellow and his "ball recycling' is hipster nonsense gone mad. Total emperor's new clothes stuff: he offers absolutely nothing, slowly. Get rid.

Well maybe you should speak to our defenders then as they are giving possession away like it’s going out of fashion!

I also watched the Heerenveen game and watched Leadbitter try 30/40 yard balls for the first 20 minutes which just gave them the ball and allowed them to attack!

You say that any competent footballer should be able to do it, well if that is the case why do clubs like Chelsea (Kante), Man Utd (Matic), Man City (Fernandinho) pay so much money for playes who in essence (but at a much higher quality) do exactly what you have just described?
In terms of our defenders absolutely agree, their distribution is dire. In terms of the 3 players you mention. They are all defensive midfielders, they spend a large portion of the game in the oppositions half. They shoot, they score some goals. They set a positive up beat tempo by running forward with the football at their feet. They are tremendous at tackling, they are box to box, they have energy, they cover the ground quickly and are rarely in the treatment room. In essence attributes that never have and never will apply to Dylan McGeouch. You and many on this thread rate him, I and many on this thread don’t. It’s a good healthy debate to be fair.

A player that seldom plays is responsible for a centre backs terrible distribution. Playing stupid passes that said centre back is unable to or were never a viable option while moaning at the player that's seldom plays for not hitting the same hopeless passes.

In English?

It boils down to options available to him in possession, if there is no movement and we are standing with our fingers up our backsides, I’d prefer him to retain possession and go backwards as appose to hitting a ball aimlessly forward and giving the opposition the ball.

I get that and there's definitely a lack of forward movement. however all it generally achieves is a lump forward and a fight to regain possession. the central midfielders also need to take the responsibility of carrying and moving the ball forward.

He's a good player, didn't play too well yesteday but not many did. I won't judge any one until we've started in a decent formation that the players are comfortable in which will hopefully be the case on Saturday.

Lead better played a similar role with cattermole next to him. It more than often resulted in him playing 50 yard passes into touch. If the end output is the same but its not dm that is putting it into touch, why is he the one that gets the shit?

No questions

It's ridiculous to suggest I have an agenda. I'm not against Jocks and I don't know Dylan. What other agenda?

He's just not a player who will make our team as a whole attack more effectively. When you've only had 2 f***ing shots in 2 games I would say that's a problem. One that a very negative, very defensive midfielder is highly unlikely to help the team improve upon on.

Clearly you don’t grasp how a football team functions. I’m done with this pointless discussion.

I only played competitive football for over 20 years...

I know that the team is everything and that a good balance to the team is key to having a good side. All players have strengths and weaknesses and currently we have glaring weaknesses throughout the team.

A player who accepts no responsibility to take positive actions to improve the team and plays the game within himself in his own negative, defensive bubble is of little use to the team. That is a nutshell is Dylan McGeouch.

If we had 2 in form strikers or 2 brilliant wingers or a great in form number 10 Dylan's negative keep ball might work but we just don't.

Compare McGeouch to O'Nien last season. He was played out of position but he drove forward at every opportunity, won penalties, created chances for others and scored goals too. All from full back. That is a team player taking responsibility for the good of the team. McGeouch simply does not do that, ever.

I don’t think he’s quite as bad as made out by the OP but I certainly don’t see the midfielder some see. He’s a bit one dimensional for me and can’t really get about the pitch.

He’s just the same as Leadbitter and neither are good enough. Could easily have afforded Catts for those two
