FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

We handed the test to the Aussies on day 1...to have them 122-8 and find ourselves in this position is criminal

That has to be the biggest fuck-up/best comeback in Ashes history for many years. Some deja vu of the Gabba in 2017 where we were seemingly well in control: 302 on the board, Australia 75/4 and then Smith comes in and hits 140.

Both teams batting line ups arent great (Smith being the obvious nemesis) so its going to come down to the bowlers. Archers pace might make a difference (not being a bowler light will certainly help. Just go to hope we find a spin solution).

*Im working on the assumption Smith isnt going to get a ton every innings.
He averages it against us mind
Or Smith wrestled it away....

I bet that would be the talk if it'd been us coming back like they did.
First innings absolutely. Not just Smith but Siddle staying in for as long as he did.

But it’s obvious that this pitch is a Test batsman’s dream and we only made a lead of 90, and slowly. I said at the time that 90 was nothing. Barely took a session to clear. We basically batted the First innings like we should have batted this one. That’s what really pisses me off about these big hitters. They go for it like Roy did today in a Nothing situation but we’re pretty timid when there was actually call for an aggressive dominating posture.

Our new director of cricket Ashley Giles says he aims to focuss England’s game back towards the longer format. Apparently he aims to reward Test cricketers better, in a bid to persuade our younger players to not chase lucrativeTwenty20 contracts early in their career at the expense of learning their game in first-class cricket. So I reckon it's gonna be a few years before we see how successful he will be.
