FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

That's cricket but on paper we've done well.

Cricket isn't played on paper though. Australia have wrestled the momentum away from us. A good start for them in the morning and the game could quite quickly slip away from us. On the other hand, a solid start from the openers in the morning and we could drag ourselves back in the right direction but we'd still have a lot to do considering we will have to bat in the 4th innings.

300 was par. The betting odds suggested so, if Australia had gotten 350+ it would have been their day no arguments.

I think England are marginally ahead but its pretty close.

A lot rests on whether Jimmy returns, if he doesn't and comes down to just Woakes and Broad again, it will be another tough shift for them and Australia will fancy their chances.

It will, let's hope they get a full day's rest and more. A bit of sun on the pitch to dry it out and we'd have 6 bowlers including 2 part time spinners who aren't great but are not shite either.

Unfortunately, I am leaning ever so slightly the other way. Like you say though, it's close.

England's target should be to bat for at least the next day and a half. Nothing too stupid, get to around 400+, hopefully more if one or two of our main men get hundreds.

Recent history, however, suggests it will more likely be approximate parity after the first two innings, leaving the game as a one innings per side shootout, with England batting last on a day 4/5 pitch.

I still think it’s our day. To get them out for less than 300 when they won the toss is a good day IMO
It isn't really honours even. The Aussies would have been looking for 350 - 400. We would have been looking to bowl them out for 250 - 300. We have the upper hand on paper IMO.

It's there abouts, par score was 290-295 on most bookie and spread betting sites. Conditions and line-ups tell you that first innings scores of 350-400 are going to be few and far between in this series.

Just bat well tomorrow and we can seize the game. Easy. :D

All sport is momentum but our chins would have been on the deck if we were coming back in the morning with them 300 for 5.

As it is we have 10 wickets in hand chasing less than 300. We had a brilliant match winning situation at 8 down but we still have a decent chance and plenty to be happy about.

This absolutely. Good post.

You could argue getting Australia out for less than 300 after losing the toss and also losing Anderson for the entire day is pretty good effort, certainly would have taken that before hand. Woakes and Broad were going to lose steam at some point but that's where Stokes comes in and he unfortunately he was f***ing shit.

If you said yesterday that we would lose the toss, then lose Anderson for nearly all the day, but get the Aussies all out for less than 300 within the day I would have taken your hand off! Those who say they wouldn’t I find very hard to believe and would like to know why.

If they had nipped a wicket out tonight I would say it was an even day. As it stands we are a little bit ahead.

The boos are getting a bit embarrassing now. Great player,

You cant make our day more successful because we lost Anderson. Surely the fact that they have nigh on 300 on the board and we have lost Anderson strengthens the argument that it was their day. I would rather be in their position than ours. We need at least 350 to take the initiative and I wouldn’t bet on us doing that.

Mate, 300 in a Test Match, after winning the toss, in a 5 day game, is a below average score in general, how does that strengthen the fact we lost Anderson? Calm your jets.

All pundits were saying bat, bat, bat and post a big first innings score, we’ve limited them to 300 and yes it could have been 180 all out but we’ve missed a Bowler for most of the match and witnessed one of the great batsmen play a splendid innings, we would all have took that at the beginning, if we bat all day tomorrow I’m confident we will post a big tally! Test cricket is back
