1993 - Groundhog Day became an instant classic. Brilliantly written among everything else. Not even nominated.

Best Original Screenplay Winner - the hugely overrated The Piano

1998 - Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth, Jane Horrocks in Little Voice, Franka Potente in Run Lola Run, Reese Witherspoon in Pleasantville, Emily Watson in Hilary And Jackie. In fact, almost any other actress who made a film that year.

Best Actress Winner: Gwyneth f***ing Paltrow

Bette Davis - All About Eve.
Marlon Brando being nominated for best actor and Al Pacino only for supporting actor for The Godfather 1973.
Alfred Hitchcock never winning best director.
Any film/actor who lost against Forrest Gump.

Didn't Black Panther win one? That. It was insultingly derivative pap.

An absolutely shit film with the notoriously unfunny but ‘hip’ Bill Murray and the relentlessly insipid Andie McDowell. Came along during a spate of ‘life-affirming’ fillums which have the basic plot of ‘arsehole is an arsehole, suffers a setback, gets a shag, stops being an arsehole’ - see also The Doctor, Doc Hollywood, Barton Fink, countless others.

Apparently all you have to do is shag Andie McDowell and her clunge contains the secret sauce which has the power to transform a born and bred arsehole into a solid member of the community.

Shite!

I didnt know that about Hitchcock - travesty
Add it to Cary Grant and Peter O’Toole (nominated seven times) never getting one either (lifetime achievement doesn’t count!)

I assumed both of those blokes had won oscars.

Hitchcock’s lack of an Oscar is a travesty.

On a related note, I watched The Shape of Water last weekend and it was shite. It won four Academy Awards if I remember correctly.

Magnolia got overlooked with American Beauty taking all the accolades around 99/00 I think, same year dunno if it even got nominated tbh?
