Oscar injustices

I heard a quote many years ago (can't remember by who) that went along lines of 'the best film Oscar has never gone to a bad film, but the best film doesn't always win it'

The latter was due to the cut released in America, which was panned. It was only later that the longer, better cut was released.

That's not entirely true... I know from a Morricone biography that with the music score for 'Once Upon A Time in America' (which everybody said at the time was a shoe in for an Oscar) it was down to a blunder by somebody at The Ladd Company (film company) who simply forgot to submit the soundtrack as a nomination!!

The same has since been said about the film itself too... as it was nominated for BAFTA and Golden Globes, but not for the Oscars. Back then the Ladd Company were using different distribution for Worldwide release (a bit like an indie record company using patchwork system for different territories) and whoever was responsible for Oscar submissions was probably having a day off?

This then resulted in Ennio Morricone falling out with Hollywood types and concentrating on European or World cinema for later scores... as for the film director Sergio Leone he was never nominated for any Oscar for any of his films! - This may in part be down to his dollar trilogy with Eastwood not really being a success until re-releases, and them being produced by a European company (Euro International) and only distributed by say Paramount Pictures.
