Parity in pay in tennis

Oh well, let’s demonstrate how much stronger men are. That’s not conflating the issue at all!

How scared of equality are you?
I was being flippant/glib. Nuance is difficult to express over social media but I suggest you calm down dearie.

If your argument is that tennis pay should be based on how many sets they play, that's fine. But if you do believe that, it logically follows that the women's football team should be paid the same as the men. After all, they play the same amount of football as the men (90 mins) .

It doesnt logically follow at all.
Wimbledon is a competition where everyone competes and if they want equal prize money then they should follow same rules.

In football its a completely different competition. If the men & womens world cup were played paralell to each other in same stadiums etc, and FIFA marketed it as a sinlge tournament/football festival of sorts then yes you could argue for equal prize money.

That would be good.

She was smashed by a man ranked 203
She's currently getting smashed by Simona Halep, lost the 1st set in about 25 minutes! Big swing and miss, big swing and net, repeat. Occasional excellent shot thrown in. She can't run, all you have to do is move her around (easier said than done sometimes mind).

Sometimes she looks good, other times like a big lumbering carthorse whose never held a racquet.

Why are you using American political terms instead of British ones?

well I was talking about transgender atheletes and it happens the majority are American, but we in this country are going the same way with 'neo-liberalism' and it being an over-arching moral and a social justice as well as a political philosophy, I'm personally a classical liberal at my heart, but point taken about the US slant.

M.Shleisinger Jr. (writing in 1956), "[l]iberalism in the American usage has little in common with the word as used in the politics of any European country, save possibly Britain"

Modern liberalism in the United States - Wikipedia

Women’s final over in 55 minutes.

Equal pay well deserved imo.

aye they want the equal ay and the perks that come with it, like them demanding maternity leave and then when they come back expecting to be put straight on the pay scale they would have been on, had they not taken the maternity, I mean it's one or the other, you can't have it all - but try telling that to a woman.

*pay

What a ridiculous and laughable argument.

Many UFC women fighters would kick the shit out of most of this board.

They are skilled fighters but Brock Lesnar would destroy all of them.

Therefore why should Brock Lesnar be paid the same as those fighters?

Strength is a big aspect in sport. If the ladies arent able to demonstrate the same level of performance why should they be paid the same?

Why stop there let's up the prize money for the junior tournament as well because the current prize money is age discrimination

I never said they should. I was replying to a comment where someone was getting excited that men are stronger than women.

I’m not sure being stronger means being better though. Hence we’d have 20 stone muscle bound 7 foot tall athletes in every sport.

In terms of pay, it simply has to be based upon revenues. If the money isn’t being made it can’t be paid.

In tennis it's a big factor as you can hit the ball harder which makes it go faster.

I'm all for equality when you are doing the same job to the same standards.

It’s about time we just said that anyone can play whatever sport they want in any competition they’ve qualified or employed to play, as long as they’re not using performance enhancing drugs from a given list.

Ridiculous to have men only or female only sports imho.

I dont think the splitarses would go for this mind

Take 'women's' and 'men's' out of all sports and remove all drug restrictions. Let the fuckers get on with it. Brock Lesnar v Rhonda Rousey, Djokovic v Williams etc. Equality in action. See how the women's world cup winning team do against a men's team. You want the same pay? Compete on the same stage.
Controversial maybe but interesting definitely

I think a person's pay should be based both upon their time and how much revenue they generate for their employer, the weightings of these will vary from industry to industry but in most industries they are broadly the same & I am in favour of equal pay. In the case of sport viewing figures/ticket sales are closely tied to revenue. Negotiations & final pay should be based upon the above factors & should have nothing to do with what someone has or doesnt have between their legs. What do you think a person's pay should be based upon?

I think we broadly agree: gender shouldn't come into it at all. Which is why I think it's a fair enough argument that the female tennis stars should play the same number of sets for the same money, and that ultimately (I'm not saying immediately!) we should aspire to have a Women's Premier League on an equal standing with the men's. Until the sponsors get on board, the fans can't get on board, which means the clubs can't get on board with equal pay. It's something to aim for, eh?

Something to move towards but not something that should just instantly happen for the sake of it. If women's football ever does generate the same gate receipts, sponsorship revenue & commercial sales as men's football then equal pay is more justified.

I do find it a little ironic that some people who are banging the drum for instant equal pay have themselves spent quite a bit of money on men's football (either by attending games, buying shirts or tv subscriptions) & have never spent a penny on watching women's football. They should put their money where their mouths are & start supporting the women's game.

Re the tennis - there is no physical reason why women cant play best of 5 sets like men do, but they may have missed the boat on that - the change should have been made when they bumped their prize money up.
