I agree with you on managers not prioritising the cups, something I can never grasp. No it is not Ashleys fault entirely for this. However Rafa is not the first and wont be the last manager to play the kids in these cups, if you are the manager of Chelsea or Man U your squad is usually a little thicker with better players on the peripherals, clubs like Newcastle have a starting 11 and maybe a couple of good players sitting on the bench, but our squad depth is shyte (please no one say "its Shite") as is most of us lower Premier league clubs. So when you are in a relegation battle, as a Manager do you want to risk your stars getting over tiered (something I also disagree with) or injured, playing Bury on a cold December in a early round league cup game? As a fan I do, but Managers don't.
So with a little investment if we were not annual relegation fodder, our Manager might just risk a cup game. So that is where I put some blame onto Ashley, Ultimately though it's the Manager who picks the team.
Dress it up whichever way you want marra but the manager's gotta decide if he wants to gan out and beat someone.

The League Cup is 7 extra games at most. The FA Cup is 5 ties to get to the Final, and just 4 to get to Wembley - a ground you haven't visited since 1999. Surely with 38 games to achieve survival, and to be fair you've ended up surviving quite comfortably, it was worth a punt on one of those competitions.

And yet in another breathe you're talking about getting into the Europe League. A competition where you'll play 6 extra fixtures just in the group stage - 3 of them likely in some arsehole of Europe. And that's without any potential qualifiers before the season's even begun. And then another potential 8 fixtures before reaching the final.

I kna what I'd prefer.

happens every year - which makes the policy of fielding shit teams in the domestic cup competitions all the more baffling, it's the only real chance 90% of clubs have of winning anything. Even then you have to pray City don't make it and do what they did to Watford

Yup, (although Europe is awsome once you get rid of the Azbekistans) which could also be at the back of some Managers minds, "whats the point"
Personally I would play my strongest team in every game.
Is my memory failing or did teams not used to consist of about 15 players and the starting 11 used to play 90% of the games? These fuckers used to smoke tabs and drink every day too... Todays players are fannies.

I couldn't agree more, personally I would play every game like it was a cup final.. I want to play for the cups and yes personally when I see the team sheet and it has the kids playing I think fuck off Rafa/Mclaren/Pardew/Keegan or who ever is incharge.

Villa used 13 players when they won the League in 1981. Although you need to be very lucky with injuries to manage with that few.

Yeah exactly, makes you wonder why the players today are such fannies, these players played on potato fields and had ten colours of shyte kicked out of them, went off partying and smoking tabs.
Now players play on putting greens are fully protected by referees and are religious on their pre approved diet.

trouble is you could qualify for the Europa League then twist like fuck about having to go to Albania in July and field the reserves, then get knocked out by a French team in the first round, the Premier League is shite tbh and it really wouldn't bother me if we didn't get back
You really not bothered? I find that a bit strange not wanting to compete at the top level?

Not exactly what Ashley does, because when we'd nearly been relegated in 14/15, the following season he sanctioned £90m worth of transfers under McClaren.
Remind us again how that worked out?

Mike isn’t daft, he learns from his mistakes, but you lot want him to continue pouring ‘his’ cash into ‘your’ club to allow you to continue to punch above your weight.

Fuck me try supporting my club..... and talk about ambition in the same breath.
You have to look beyond the owner which I know is tough indeed. I support the shirt, the players and indeed the history.
Ashley is a chapter, sure a bad one at that but the book carries on just like at any other club.
Feel for them but ffs they think they are the only club with thus problem.
“But we are Newcastle man” So my boys and myself are Swindon languishing in the basement but you have two simple choices as do all other Supporters which is go or don’t go.
Victims? ....... we all are.
Get your MP to raise at Westminster mate. Sod Brexit and all that. Shameful that Chairman aren't spending millions on football teams whether its Swindon or Newcastle United.

In fact every MP should raise it in the House of Commons for their respective football clubs. Who is Sunderland's MP? I can feel a strongly worded email coming on.

Do you not want your Chairman to do the same?

I don't know what the income level is in League 1 but it cant be very high, so (although do you still have a parachute payment?) you will require investment from your Chairman will you not?

Which is exactly why they get more injuries and they have more of an impact on performance.

As in any professional sport. If doesn't take much to strain/tear something if everything is tuned to its absolute maximum. And the impact that has on being able to perform/compete is huge.

That's not to say that modern day footballers aren't soft as shite a lot of the time and roll around for nothing which drives me crazy. But the increase in injuries, need for bigger squads etc. is exactly because the standards are so high now.

In order to compete you need to be fully fit.

Actually hopefully not. The idea is we're trying to live within our means. Parachute payment this season which helps a little, but the intention is to not need an owner to bankroll us.

Why should an owner use their own money? They have no obligation to whatsoever. Particularly nowadays and in the Prem, there should be enough money there, if run properly to compete...... which you are doing by the way (just not quite as high as you might like - because other owners are happy to throw their own cash at it).
