We have to be honest about this and admit that our vocal support is generally piss poor and has been for many years: if we don't admit there is a problem then we can't address it. Of course vocal support can make a hell of a difference as well. Our numbers have been fantastic for home games this season, but you can still count the decent atmosphers at home on one hand..
You can count the amount of times we've had a reason to do so on the same hand

Tactics, formations, players, scouting, recruitment and signings are the reason we didn't get promoted. Charlton were the better side over the season and on the day. If it was down to fans singing Watford would have won the FA Cup. It was a stupid statement to make especially as no one mentioned the fans or Charlton. All the interviewer said was Sunderland are too big of a club to be in League One and Methven had a go at the fans and started bigging up Charlton.

But our fans were piss poor and have been for most games this season.. As I say, we need to acknowledge this if we are ever going to rectify it.. You don't need a great team to have great vocal support and great vocal support can make a difference..

It did. Total myth that crowds used to be bouncing no matter what. Endless seasons of shit has that effect
Early 1970s Fullwell End was bouncing even when we were shit.. This was the case until the mid 1980s when things did deteriorate.

It’s cos we are in League 1 and play turgid, uninspiring, unexciting football.

It was jumping in the last two games v Chelsea and Everton under Big Sam. There has been fuck all to be excited about since then other than these two Wembley games and the manager bottled both of them. No the wonder the fans don’t seem “up for it”. How can we be expected to be if our players and manager aren’t?

Football has changed since the 1970's. Sadly it's a form of entertainment and fans are customers.

Once a clown always a clown!

Those statements just confirmed it for me.

Us

Prem games = 608
Seasons = 16
Points = 618

Charlton

Games = 304
Seasons = 8
Points = 279

I would add attendances in but then I'd be coming across like having at right pop at Charlton when I'm not just starting how clueless this clowns thinking is.

That's just premiership, imagine top flight football total stats!

So yes easy to say the bigger club didn't go up clown and not hard to argue it at all.

Thinks we all make his wage and can afford 2 trips to London, what an arrogant fool talking about fan totals on one day.

It doesn't take long for peoples true colours to shine through - all about the £ he's not made by us not going up ans has a pop at us.

Quite happy when this clown moves on.

No way back for you sunshine with the majority fans after a comment about our attendance like that.

Methven is a Tory boy twat who is here to make a quick buck. I won’t shed a single tear when he fucks off.

But this dummies out of the pram stuff because he said we were quiet and didn’t have a god-given right to promotion is pathetic. The fans were quiet on Sunday and were outsung by Charlton. Maybe it was the Trafalgar Square effect, may be it was lack of belief whatever. Maybe it’s the mag like tendency a healthy proportion of our fans are showing to believe we have a right to victory because we are a big club. That we somehow just deserve to beat tinpot Charlton.

We aren’t a big club. We are pretty small in ambition and recent history. Stop being twisty bairns and accept it.

He was asked this by the interviewer "It's one of these things, a club of our size we can't be in League One, or on paperwork shouldn't be in League One?"

He replied "Sunderland fans need to get realistic about that. Charlton have been in the Premier League for much of the last 20 (30) years and they had 40,000 fans today to our 34,000 fans there today, so on sheer size of club it's hard to say Charlton are the ones who had to stay down"

Is he just talking out his arse? Charlton have been in Premier League for 7 of the last 20 seasons and it was continous from 2000-01 to 2006-07 so they haven't been in for 13 years now. The only time before that was in 1998-99 when they beat us in the '98 playoff so 8 times in the last 30 years! We've been in the Premier League 15 of the last 20 seasons and 2 of those just recently so a big difference given the change since 2000 in football finances.

They never hit higher than 27,000 average while in Premier League as that was their capacity yet he's praising them travelling 20 odd miles with an average of under 12,000 this season. On top of the obvious reasons stated in the thread regarding going twice in 8 weeks etc, he's conveniently forgetting the 'forced' membership for Phase 1/2 and eventual late release of Phase 3 purchase history fiasco that will have put people off quite a bit given Phase 3 was announced so late (probably because SAFC thought they'd sell out by Phase 2)

He then said "I thought the Charlton fans were very loud, very vocal today. I thought our fans were quiet and it was almost as if that both fans, players, we as management we have to take responsibility aswell. It was like the club didn't quite believe enough to make it happen and we all need to take a look at ourselves and underestand, what we need to do and sort this out cos it's obviously a terrific disappoinment"

So blaming the fans for not making noise is just f***ing stupidity of the highest degree! If fans really won games we'd be in the Premier League challenging for Europe the daft fucker! I think our fans have given far more than has been returned from the pitch over the years bith home and away.
That fekka is talking shite ..You cannot compare sunderland to charlton ffs they had an average of 11000 this season........they only way charlton is better than sunderland is on the pitch and that is partly due to ton up charlie ant his motley crew .........he needs to hang his head in shame ....he is a useless spin merchent trying to use stats and stupid baseless opinion on a local radio station .

True fella but we dwarf charlton!

That is something that I will always fight against.. Football is far more than that..

Strange how some of the small clubs fans who have never even been close to the premier league can be right up for it..

I fully agree. The quiet thing, I couldn't care less about, I just didn't like the ticket sales bit, which was evidently bothering him.

The clues were there for the ticket sales when only 24,000 of our fans turned up at home to Portsmouth.. I thought then that we would struggle to sell tickets for the final..

I don't pretend to know individual circumstances but Wembley is an expensive trip, particularly twice in 6 weeks. I just thought it was poor from him tbh

Spot on. Well said. Think he may get a shock or two when he’s drinking with the away regulars next season.

There’s a lot of lads I know who go to every match who are absolutely seething with him and will be more than happy to discuss it next time we meet.

While we are on the subject of people not having enough cash to jump at your constant commands Charlie, how much money have you put in?

Pompous pretentious parasite. I’ve got nowt against Donald as he seems a genuine bloke but our Tory Boy can fuck off for me asap.

He understands the people of the North East about as well as his hero Thatcher.

f***ing hell are people still going on about this? :lol::lol:

A misjudged comment. Yes probably.
Taken out of context by some. Definitely.

I wonder how many people blustering on about this are the first to call people "snowflakes" for being "easily offended".Oh but that's different because this time it's you that's offended?

f***ing grow up man. It was a few silly words from a bloke who people wank over for having a pint with the lads. It just change one f***ing thing about our situation.

I cant argue with what he said at all. The attendance thing was said because the guy asking the questions said we shouldnt be in this division based on club size, he replied saying well look at Charlton, they brought more so club size doesnt matter. Thats the way i took it.

We need a designated singing section if we get to wembo again like Charlton did so everyone who wants to make a noise can. Was too spread out. Overall though our support this season has been class in numbers but absolutely shite in terms of vocal support except for a few games.

Yep.. the amount of fannies on here sitting in a dark room in their pants just waiting to be offended or looking for some way to slag off the owners is horrible.. f***ing ridiculous

Mr Methven lost himself a few friends the other day, as long as he’s not losing pound notes he won’t lose any sleep.
