The saddest thing is these days football gets compared to other forms of entertainment. Once upon a time it'd be laughed at saying you're not going to the gig to give the artists an advantage. Now it pretty much is simply all about entertainment (for most).

It didn't even sound loud when we scored or the minutes that followed, including when Leadbitter went close to making it two. Mind I think for the goal most didn't know what the fuck had happened.

Most of us were in a state of disbelief at the goal, people asking if it had been allowed and that as we were so shocked.

I wasn't, I was quoting the poster I was in discussion with.
I know and I was agreeing with you !( I understood you meant " others" marra)

Seriously mate. Every single person I spoke to around me and on the way out said as soon as they equalised, thry had no confidence we would get anything. Its happened far too often for it to just be nerves or bad luck
Correct
Everyone knew it was coming
They can't blame a big "expectant" stadium of light crowd when they are at Wembley so now we are too quiet!
How about the players get a grip of the game and after being gifted a goal play on the front foot..seven defeats at Wembley in a row and I'm canny sick of them at the minute( will be back mind at start of season!))

Straight talking from him here. No complaints from me about that. He has praised fans when they deserve it. Also straight about teams shortcomings. Bored with the 'we are too big' type questions from interviewers. He gave it short shrift.
Still think his strides are shit though

agree with all that. we've always got to have someone to have a pop at.

I see many fans turning against the club simply because we have not had instant success with the new owners/manager.. It is my view that a club is only as strong as its fanbase, and ours is looking very fragile right now..

Who is turning against the club? Also, how is the fanbase looking fragile?

I thought his comment about not selling all of our tickets was ill-thought, particularly from a PR bloke.

There was one person having a passive aggressive pop at that point. No-one round me was doing anything but applaud the players and the opposition fans.

The interview was straight after the match. Metro Radio, for their own reasons, chose not to broadcast it until yesterday. Some people may claim that this a Newcastle radio station shit-stirring. I couldn't possibly comment.
To cite the fans immediately after the match as being partly responsible for the defeat is even worse than doing so 48 hours later - for the very reasons that I originally gave.
The man is a PR expert you're surely not suggesting that he would have been unaware that the media would seize upon the slightest indiscretion in his interview and exploit it for all its worth. People retain PR firms to specifically avoid situations like that. If he was particularly pissed off about the defeat the usual advice is to keep your gob firmly shut when approached by the press and not allow oneself to be quoted in anger.

Have you not read the thousands of posts all over social media slamming owners, manager and players for not achieving instant success?

People still in London wouldn't even have heard it. If @Guinness Guzzler hadn't made the post, down here in Bristol I'd never even have known it had happened. If you trawl around Linkedin, you'll find ex-employees at Dragon PR claiming he has a very short temper and lashes out unthinkingly when he loses it. Word I've had is that he was absolutely seething after the match. Let's just say his comments weren't likely to have been thought out and considered, which they would have been had the interview actually taken place yesterday. And then Metro decide to broadcast it hours before he's due to sit down with a fanzine for a podcast. I'll freely admit to being a cynic; the cynic is me says the were hoping the RR lads would have picked up on their broadcast before the podcast was recorded, and that it would influence their line of questioning.
You could tell he was when he was shown during the match.

What did he say, never got chance to listen to it.
He was asked this by the interviewer "It's one of these things, a club of our size we can't be in League One, or on paperwork shouldn't be in League One?"

He replied "Sunderland fans need to get realistic about that. Charlton have been in the Premier League for much of the last 20 (30) years and they had 40,000 fans today to our 34,000 fans there today, so on sheer size of club it's hard to say Charlton are the ones who had to stay down"

Is he just talking out his arse? Charlton have been in Premier League for 7 of the last 20 seasons and it was continous from 2000-01 to 2006-07 so they haven't been in for 13 years now. The only time before that was in 1998-99 when they beat us in the '98 playoff so 8 times in the last 30 years! We've been in the Premier League 15 of the last 20 seasons and 2 of those just recently so a big difference given the change since 2000 in football finances.

They never hit higher than 27,000 average while in Premier League as that was their capacity yet he's praising them travelling 20 odd miles with an average of under 12,000 this season. On top of the obvious reasons stated in the thread regarding going twice in 8 weeks etc, he's conveniently forgetting the 'forced' membership for Phase 1/2 and eventual late release of Phase 3 purchase history fiasco that will have put people off quite a bit given Phase 3 was announced so late (probably because SAFC thought they'd sell out by Phase 2)

He then said "I thought the Charlton fans were very loud, very vocal today. I thought our fans were quiet and it was almost as if that both fans, players, we as management we have to take responsibility aswell. It was like the club didn't quite believe enough to make it happen and we all need to take a look at ourselves and underestand, what we need to do and sort this out cos it's obviously a terrific disappoinment"

So blaming the fans for not making noise is just f***ing stupidity of the highest degree! If fans really won games we'd be in the Premier League challenging for Europe the daft fucker! I think our fans have given far more than has been returned from the pitch over the years bith home and away.

Most bizarrely, he wasn't even asked about the fans. He just decided to attack us regardless.

We have to be honest about this and admit that our vocal support is generally piss poor and has been for many years: if we don't admit there is a problem then we can't address it. Of course vocal support can make a hell of a difference as well. Our numbers have been fantastic for home games this season, but you can still count the decent atmosphers at home on one hand..

Spot on ^
Charlie has made a right arse of himself with these comments
Add to the cost of 2 Wembley trips in no time & the economic differences between South London & the North East it really shows how out of touch the bloke is
