Charlie Methven on metro radio

We shouldn't be where we are. A club our size should not sink this low. But that doesn't say we are deserving of anything more. We are where we deserve to be. It's performances on the field that seem where you deserve to be.
Agree..

Strange things to say, I have thought for a while he would be the one to cause the owners problems by saying something daft.
If he doesn’t think we are a bigger club than Charlton he should go tbh. I can’t think of a single measure whereby they would be classed as bigger. It’s him who needs to get realistic.

You are missing my point. The team sent out was the same as the one sent out for a 0 0 at Pompey. A set up that created no chances - do you disagree with that?

When I saw the way he had set it up my heart sank and I felt flat because I felt we were going into a play off final playing for 0-0. You cant disagree with that because thats how me and my mates felt. I think others will have felt the same and it offers an explanation for Methven's criticism of our fans.

My point exactly... the lack of belief didn't come from the fans, it came from the manager AND team AND team sheet AND permeated through to the fans. It was a statement about the entire club's attitude going into that game, and its spot on.

Well its got us debating it I guess.......To be fair I had already started a thread about the lack of atmosphere last night as it was so obvious at the game. Had we been as good as Trafalgar square and outside the ground it would have been rocking.....I havent been able to speak for 2 days and my throat is ruined so I know I was singing plenty but perhaps we need to stay a little more focused on the game rather than shooting our load in the fans zones or the fountains the night before?
Fcuk me was that lesson not learned at Checkatrade.i sang me heart out at Covent Garden.then TS .then Wembley.to be honest as supporters don't know what else we could have done

I agree we should set the bar high but the comparison with 98 is for the birds.

We had quality and determination throughout that squad. Our second choice strike force would have been the best in the division in 98/99. We needed two players to make us not far off unbeatable at that level. We signed Sorensen and Butler and the rest is history.

For this side to achieve a similar relative level, we need four new defenders, two central midfielders and two strikers and to retain our keeper and McGeady. All that is going to be a much bigger challenge than 98.

disagree tbh. in my opinion this side was good enough to win the league. should have, we bottled it in every situation that mattered.

the calibre of player was good enough imo, motivation, organisation, form and fitness were factors more so than the quality of player

Imagine what he said about people watching it on telly!

The quiet crowd had nothing to do with enthusiasm and everything to do with partying the night before, exactly like the Checkatrade cup
Absolute crap.
The ones who party are, imo, the ones who sing.
The 4k at charlton earlier this season didn't party at TS and without doubt is vocally the worst away crowd I have been in

How ?
The bloke is a spiv . Obviously you fall for his absolutely pathetic , desperate manner
Called Sunderland fans parasites. Needs to look in the mirror. Fuck methven

Wasn't it the pub fans that he called parasites? Not language I'd agree with but he certainly didn't call people at the SOL by that name.

We're not. Without mclaughlin we would be outside the top 6 easy

Didn't take long for the fannies on here to start turning against the owners. I knew this good will and apparent mature approach wouldn't last
At least the floaters can use it as an excuse to not go to games next year and we'll be back to the base of 25-26,000 real fans who support their team

You are allowed to question him at times man. It’s not always black or white (thankfully ;))

I’m behind them, however I don’t like his comment on the attendance. He didn’t need to say it, and it served no purpose.

He does have a tendency to come out with some digs mind, whether he means it or not. Not the greatest strength for a PR man.

Sums up the SMB this these days mind. It’s either the owners are out to get us or they’re not to be questioned. There can be middle ground.

He’s probably right that the fans were quieter than maybe the occasion usually produces. However this was in the context of the team limping into the end of the season with some rubbish performances and defeats. The lads were unconvincing on the field on Saturday.

I find it weird that he decided to have a snipe at the fans two days after this disappointment.

The distance from The Valley to Wembley is about the same as it is from The Stadium of Light to Ashington.

Imagine if Wembley was that close for you, man  At least there wouldn't be this Trafalgar Square thing which I keep reading burned your fans out to the detriment of your support at the main event.

To do it once can be put down as naive but to have the feeling that going for it the night before hindered your level of support on the day and still do it again the next time you are down there is madness.

This isn't me pointing the finger at your fans, btw but there is this feeling on here that a lot of your more vocal support was fucked from effects the night before. Twice

I think it's bollocks tbh. Aye, some will have gone far too mental at Trafalgar but honestly, it wasn't really a massive thing this time. Most people had gone by about 11/ 12, so (like me) will have had a good 8 hours to sleep it off, plenty time for a breakfast in the morning and then a good few more pints before kick off. It's not like it's some all night session ending at 4am and the match is at 10. Like I say some no doubt overdid it and might have been a bit rough the next day, but I didn't see many on the night who I thought would have any bother the next morning

Aye. Called them parasites then invented a golden ticket to make sure they could be rewarded with Wembley tickets. Then they don't know the words to songs so don't sing and he crys about it.

The league tables never lie , we’ve been shit for years man.

The quicker some of own fans accept it the better , shit football , shit atmosphere, it forms a whirlpool to the cesspit of the lower leagues.
