Charlie Methven on metro radio

He’s wrong to have a pop at the number of fans we had there given the fact it was asking people from one of the most deprived areas of the UK to make a second trip there in the space of a couple of months.

He’s right that charlton were louder and created more support for their team.

Thing is, he’s not one of us. He’s not had to suffer the shite we’ve had to endure for the past 15 years. He’s had a few of these interviews now where he has a pop. And it’s getting a bit irritating to be honest. He’s all positive when he’s trying to sell tickets then as soon as people dare to complain he’s slagging our support off.

It’s one thing our supporters collectively looking at ourselves and pointing out where we need to improve. It’s another him sneering at us having been here five minutes.

Not my cup of tea since day one this knacker

I am not a fan. I was present at a question & answer session that he was hosting towards the end of the season. And on two occasions, when he was midway through answering questions, he stopped to answer his phone.

I know it is a small thing, but I found it highly unprofessional and also quite dismissive towards his audience.

There were also a few other things he said that did not sit comfortably with me.

If the team entertained the fans by maybe trying to attack a little perhaps the atmosphere may have matched eh Charlie? It’s been hard work to watch for months so it’s little surprise the crowd are flat.

we were 1-0 up at a final at Wembley after about 5 minutes and we could barely muster a chant of 'red and white army'. Methven is probably as fed up of hearing "entertain us and we'll chant for you" as I am.

Apologies if SEB, haven't seen anything about it. Bit of an odd interview like, suggesting Charlton are as big a club as us (seemingly specifically because they had more fans at Wembley and entirely ignoring the fact they had low attendances at the start of the season so effectively just had a lot of day trippers). Also mentioning the fans being quiet (can't really argue, although I'd argue that the football served up didn't exactly help). He divides opinion a bit so will be interesting to see how this one goes down

Wish this gobshite would give it a rest

Spill the beans marra!

Him and SD with their pleas have resulted in an Inc in St sales and a sell out on boxing day.
It's worked a treat.
If you think they should sit their quietly and not try to boost our numbers and revenue then that's really odd

Begging for money
There is a difference. Is he moaning because we didn't sell out for Wembley for the 2nd time ??
He has got a f***ing cheek

He's not saying we're not as big as Charlton.
He's responding to a question saying we shouldn't be in league one and he's responding with the facts that Charlton have been a prem team and took 40k (more than us, and I know there are factors involved in that, but it's still true) and they also deserve promotion too.
The lad interviewing, and the rest of us, couldn't give a shite whether Charlton deserve to be promoted or not. All we care about is Sunderland, and we don't want to be involved in League 1, and for a club this size nor should we be. So I'm afraid it's Charlie boy who needs to get realistic on that count.

How about the fact they averaged 11k at home and us 32k. Also however many thousand more away.
This is forgetting the fact we sold out about 2 month at wembley before

My opinion of him is changing. He can get fucked can get fucked coming out with shit like this

Finding it hard to disagree with most of that and he spoke as a fan rather than a board member.

People get so offended when anyone dares question our support but he’s right. We were quiet on Sunday and we are in this league because we deserve to be. That still hasn’t sunk in with some people, imo.

What I do disagree with is bringing the numbers into it, given the travel and expense, on top of the previous Wembley trip.

The interviewer said that a club of "our" size can't be in league one and he butted in to say that "Sunderland fans" need to get realistic about that because Charlton have spent lots of time in the Premier League and had 40k to our 34k. Completely ignoring the fact that its a 600mile round trip for us for the second time in 2 months and their first in 21 years for what a 50 mile round trip? Let his mask slip here if you ask me.
