Plenty of police were standing round at the bottom of the North Stand doing nothing - loads of people asking the inspector in charge and he did nowt - one of the coppers said his job was to watch us and make sure we didn't cause trouble another threatened to arrest someone for making a complaint. Please pass this back to whichever policeman told you this.
f***ing disgrace. Like I've posted on here, my lad nearly got hit with a bottle from above. .....and Police or stewards just stand and watch. Absolute disgrace.

Woman in her 60s two seats behind me was hit with a bottle full of water broke her glasses and cut her nose. The club had her and her family in one of the boxes for the Doncaster game

Let’s hope that the classless charver scum that support Portsmouth don’t take lessons from Coventry ***** city

Don’t shoot the messenger, but apparently, the problems were so bad - and so wide spread- that the decision was taken not to pile in and arrest people. Instead spotters were deployed to film people.
I find that hard to believe. Would be shocking policing. Let's let wankers throw stuff indiscriminately and hurt folk and we can get them later

I got the phone call of the same bloke as OP are it's true unbelievable the events that went on that day ,Safety Officer asked for a Hold back to keep Coventry in the ground ,he was denied off the Police.

I'm over the whole thing tbh.. I was right under it all for the Coventry game and was livid at the time, the club aren't liable for what happened as a result of their fans but surely they are liable for the Policing and stewarding, after all the club employ them.

But having said that I'm confident the club won't let such a situation of that magnitude happen again. They could do with bringing out a final statement on it and putting it to bed, once they do that it's time the disgruntled fans move on and put it to bed themselves.

Wait and see what happens tomorrow with the classless scum following Portsmouth

Like GG has already pointed out..if the cops approach was not to incite anything by wading in and hoying people out, but standing back and filming and using CCTV ,then surely we can expect dozens or so arrests to follow.
Make no bones about it if there isn't people being lifted for what went on then that's worse than doing nothing on the day, just using it as an excuse as to why they were shit scared to wade in...

Just being Devils Advocate here , but each arrest takes at least two officers away . So if say 9 arrests were made , I would imagine that would probably wipe out most of the police in the ground.
As fans have said , there was a nasty atmosphere in the ground and the potential was there for it to have escalated after the final whistle. It’s possible that the police officer in charge felt that he needed the cops available to prevent any further disorder outside.
I still can’t understand why those in the North Stand tunnel were not sent up to try and prevent the missile throwing like.

I sit in the North Stand and spent most of the game watching what was going on above instead of watching the game. The flare that came down landed two seats behind covering the area in blue dust which was still there at the next game. I sent two emails to the club and have had no reply the club is ultimately responsible for our safety that is why they have public liability insurance. I have never been so angry about what was happening the stewards ignored our concerns as did the police inspector who stood next to us and the two Sunderland employees who could only say it was the stewards fault. The lack of media coverage is unbelievable and the lack of response on the Sunderland website if any of the objects thrown had hit a player or official there would have been uproar but as it was fans it doesn't seem to matter so much for connecting with the fans its only spin to sell more seats and merchandise.

You had to email Steve Neil Safety officer

If you see folk chucking stuff and getting away with it then that's when more folk will think 'ill do this too - no repercussions'
However if they arrested the first then surely that would be a deterrent?
I'm disgusted with the polices attitude to this tbh.
