The Trafalgar Square Weekender once a seasoners

Absolute shite. Got comprehensively out sung by Pompey and were just generally quite when it mattered
Bullshit. From what I heard it was like Pompey literally only had one ‘chant’ all afternoon. They would do the ‘Play up Pompey, Pompey play up’ a single time and then would go fairly quiet for around twenty minutes before repeating this. For the most part they were only really active when Portsmouth were on the attack, which granted was for most of the second half, but you would expect that from any side.

And?

So if Sunderland were playing in Leeds with 40K in attendance there wouldn't be shit loads in town 3 or 4 hours before kick off?

Pompey had over 20K day trippers who were dropped off and picked up at Wembley. They never saw anything of London or the inside of a pub.

If that's what they want to do fine but it's boring as fuck IMO.
To be honest, it would probably be the same for with us if we were closer to London - or similar to your example, if the national stadium was in Leeds, you’d have a lot, lot more just going for the game on the day.

Because it’s a little bit futher for us geographically, and to be fair, it would be the similar with the likes of the Mags and Boro, it becomes more of a reason to make a weekend of it. I don’t think it’s necessarily boring, we paid 200 quid for a four star hotel on Russell Square, I mean, personally, I’d be a little bit less inclined to do that if I could just jump on a coach or train on the morning of the game and be there and back within an hour or so. I’d imagine in such a case there’d be a ‘buzz’ but it would probably be around the town the night before and on the morning of the game rather than in London itself.

Next time , and there will be a next time , maybe we should do all the Trafalgar Square stuff after the game and not before ?
There is no doubt in my mind that a lot of us were knackered for the game due to the night before and it affected the atmosphere.

It will be interesting to see what happens if we are back for the play off, when arguably the game is more important than the weekend ( which was not really the case yesterday) .

If we're there for thr play off final, that's a Saturday so makes sense

It looks like people had a great weekend which is what it’s all about. This cock waving about singing the loudest is pitiful tbh and I say that when we are patting ourselves on back as well.

FWIW only song I sang with any gusto all day was the national anthem.
Only song I refused to join in with.

Even so, when coaches take our lads and lasses to localish away games they get there a couple of hours before so they can sample the boozers in and around town.

If we had won then i think it would have been back to Trafalgar Sq but as we keep getting beat we never seem to get the chance and end up in the bars drowning our sorrows and having a crack on.

That’s a good point .
So is the comment about the game being a Sunday , would possibly be a different scenario if a Saturday??

Complete and utter lie. Wise Men Say before kick off was massive. 'By Far The Greatest Team' after we scored was massive.

I reckon so. There'd be plenty people supping on the morning and still a few too drunk to get in, but not as many who were too knackered to sing/chant/remain awake

Surely the ardent 28,000 season card holder made up for them though. You know, the ones who are always on saying how good they are and should be given extra tickets because they're so loyal and make so much noise at the SOL.

This would probably be due to them having an official "singing section".
They sorted it for all of their singers to be in one area and it spread from there
Big lesson to be learnt by SAFC there.

Nothing like being with a bunch of your mates singing your heart out but yesterday, because of the way tickets were allocated, people were spread all over the place. The usual 2-3000 who sing at away games were dispersed amongst 40,000 and it was hard to get any momentum behind any songs.

Maybes. I don’t actually want to sound like I’m playing devil’s advocate here, but the immediate area around Wembley isn’t actually all that great for pubs and drinking. But as we walked to Wembley from Wembley Central and then down to meet people on Wembley Way where we just had tins. But there was actually a huge number of them drinking in the area nearest their end of the ground - and that was a few hours beforehand.

So in a strange kind of way, the most obvious counterpoint would be something like us against the Mags away, where there’ll often be a good atmosphere the night before the game and then a ‘buzz’ on the morning where everyone has a drink before making their way to the game.

Been saying this for last 2 seasons but our chants are absolutely f***ing shite. We need a good proper song book like united.

Anything that sounds decent people can't be arsed to learn the words. Our atmosphere is shite outside of the core 2,000. Only chant people join in with is haway the lads & by far the greatest team.

Roker aces should be brought back en masse. Someone put a video up of that being belted out at the 85 league cup final and it sounded immense.

Agreed though, our usual chants are f***ing shite.

Don't think the club did much wrong with the allocations. Everyone could sit together, only issue was the whole season card holder first then purchase history thing, but even if people waited until phase 2 they'd have been fine. There were seven of us all together in the ground, can't complain at that.

Obviously there wasn't a specific section just for the regular away attendees but not much they could have done about that. They could have added an even earlier phase just for those on 20 points plus or something and only opened a few sections together, but then those people would have rightly moaned that they were the top BCP holders and were given a small, restrictive choice of seats. Equally a Wembley trip is totally different to an away game, a lot of those on high points wouldn't want to be in their own section, they'd want to be sat with family and friends who might not go as regularly. It might have helped the atmosphere a bit, but don't think it would have been massively workable

People want to go home after the match, so post match Trafalgar Square won’t work. Plus who’d want to go if we lost. Give us a proper match and performance and we’d rock Wembley, a big night before or not. Yesterday was tinpot, hardly any of the action was at our end and we didn’t play well after half time. That caused the atmosphere issues

The mags away scenario you make is ridiculous to be honest. They are 12 miles away and most don't drink in Newcastle due to open hostility (and vice versa of course).

There was no animosity towards Pompey fans from Sunderland supporters at all.

But if the game was a Saturday ?
It would make a difference.

We don’t have to do anything , and it’s not mandatory, maybe the next time will be a spontaneous celebration after the game if we win .
