Almost like some kind of cover-up. Some poor bloke on his way home after a night out end s up dead at the side of the road and silence, no appeal for witnesses or an anything.
@duff_man why might there be a news embargo in this case? Does seem very odd, both the victim and perpetrator are known locally.

Just been posted on Durham Police Facebook Page

Police are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian was struck and killed on the A177 at Shincliffe.

The collision occurred just before midnight on Friday (March 1) on the A177 southbound as the road climbs towards High Shincliffe.

A black Audi A3 lost control on the bend and struck a pedestrian who was walking on the footpath.

The pedestrian was a local man in his 60’s who despite the efforts of emergency services was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The road remained closed for several hours while accident investigators surveyed the scene.

Prior to the collision, the black Audi A3 is believed to have travelled from Durham City in the direction of Bowburn.

Two men aged 27 and 24 and a woman aged 22 were arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and have since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage of the vehicle prior to the collision is asked to contact the Collision Unit on 0191 3752159 or Durham Police on 101 quoting reference 2 of March 2.

Awful.

Such a shame just going about his business as he normally would by the sounds of things.

Hopefully the police can get enough evidence to get all three prosecutions and get some closure. Not that it will change anything for the family and friends who are now missing the gent.

He does mate, yes.

That long hair comment has got me thinking I might now who he is. Just to say alright to like.

Glasses? Fairly tall and stocky?
Quite a quiet bloke?

If it's who I think it is he's a face I've seen around Durham since I started going out years ago.

Sad regardless of who it is though. :(

Yeah tall with glasses. I've seen him in the Big Jug a few times.

Thanks, I'm almost certain it's who I'm thinking of.

I'd seen him around the Durham Park Run course a few times too in the last few years. Suppose he would have been out and about getting to town living up that way and just stopped to watch.

The problem would be proving who was driving, if there were three of them. I'm guessing that's why they're asking for dashcam footage of the car before the accident.

There was a similar case in a tv documentary last year where two of the occupants in a car were saying the other was driving when it crashed, and it was only months later they proved who it was from clothing fibres trapped in the driver's side seat belt.

Cant believe my first post on here is about this... As said previously sad regardless of who it is. But having known him for many years, you couldnt wish to meet a nicer bloke. A true gent with time for everyone, he loved a beer and loved live music. RIP mate
After hearing what the people in the car did, I hope justice is served

The last time I saw him he was ticking off all my local Wetherspoons on one of his trips to the O2.

I've just had a long chat with my cousin, and some of the details of this tragedy are too awful to contemplate.

They travelled all over UK and Europe together and had plans after retirement to go further afield in search of live music, and the Kennedy space centre.

One of the things he wants to do is set up an annual pub based rock festival in remembrance, probably in Spennymoor.

The funeral will be a week on Friday.
