I’m surprised that it managed to stay open as long as it has, but sadly is closing today.

Has quite a few SAFC related pictures and prints, everything half pric

Always sad when a shop shuts, but especially such a Sunderland tradition. I hope it was the owners choice (were assuming it wasn't which is fair enough). Must be tough having an art shop in the digital age.
Yeah, it's a shame about this shop, it's been a part of Sunderland for years.

I remember feeling gutted when the Durham Book Centre shop closed down. I was a fantastic shop that I loved to buy from or just go in and browse.

A real shame. I still haven't gotten over Hills closing.

Sadly I'm as guilty as anyone of buying online now, while also decrying the death of the high street.
Books from Amazon, art from Society6/Etsy, art supplies from Jackson's.

I'm sure they never made a fortune and their margins were pretty tight so I can guarantee this will be down to the recent crippling business rate increases.

Can't believe I forgot about that place. Was great going upstairs. It felt like a Propper shot. Loads of character.

Totally agree...if I can buy something on-line, I normally do...and apart from a few pairs of trainers from Aphrodite, can honestly say, I'v not bought anything else in Sunderland City Centre for quite a few years.

Shame but time moves on

Never been in ,neither have the majority
They'll moan about decline of course
I did go in Hills mind as a young artist
Luckily theres a museum called WH Smith to look at all the cool pencils and stuff

There was an Art Shop next to DBC back in the day.

Not sure if that was them before they moved to the other side of the street?

Don't recall that. Was where the entrance to the Cooper Rose is now.
So was Whites ,moved round the corner early 80s to the ornate fronted shop on derwent St (now tattoos )

Definitely!

Couple who owned it had a shop at the bottom of Alston bank after it went ,selling a lot of similar stuff .Probably moved out that way

Whites was originally where the cash converter now is in Holmeside, When did it move next to the DBS?
