Stadium refinancing idea

Most businesses, in their infancy, go bust. The most successful business man I know has had a string of businesses go bust - this isn't untypical for entrepreneurs. The ones that have been successful offset the failures. Mortgaging the stadium to start a new business is a big risk. It may pay off, it might not. The idea of not jeopardising one business to gamble on another is a good one. it's referred to as 'not betting the farm'. Mortgaging the stadium i.e. putting the club £40M in debt for no on-field gain (because, SAFC is a football club) falls into the category of 'betting the farm', for me.

That said, if he reckons he can make it work, then, it's his club, so he has the right to do what he thinks is best for the club. He bought the ball, so he can play with it however he wants to.
I disagree. As he continually says it's our club. He's a duty of care to a whole community owning the club. Gambling the ground on making a few extra milliom quid does not sit well. At all.

I like how he's continually thinking about increasing revenue streams but this seems a very concerning idea. Hopefully just a case of him thinking out aloud.

He states this as a possibility just before mentioning the idea of using club assets to create other income streams which would keep his personal interest going. Wouldn't be surprised if both things happened in a two prong approach. I'm sure the 'hotels' were very much just 'as an example'. It might just as easily have been a national chain of dental practices or cinemas or anything that would guarantee a fixed income stream.
In the next couple of years or so i think everyone will know what our true position is ..........im hoping for the best whilst maintaining a sceptical eye ............

Loaning money isn't a revenue stream imo and quite frankly I don't have the utmost faith in the scouting department.

Just my opinion but it isn't something I would endorse what so ever.
He's on about then investing that money to create revenue long term mate.

Yep, my mistake, I hadn't listened prior and made assumptions. My apologies.

I'm all for broadening our horizons in clever ways.
Exactly. Obviously there's risk but I don't think they'd gamble the whole stadium or owt and would only do it if they could minimise the risk.

Plus he said its just one of many ideas so it'll be interesting to see the club developed and see us making the most of every opportunity.

he owns it and just bought you a striker..safc doesnt have any money,...hge does. my immediate reaction is i dont like this idea though.

Most clubs don't pay the full amount up front. It's spread across a few years. So I doubt the grigg money was a 3m quid bank transfer like.
didnt mean upfdront in that sense..i meant the initial fee..ie without add ons is three million..of course its installemnts..but there atea couple of immeidate pauyments..and we got nowt for maja..so stewart has had to do a bit from his onw pocket..

Don't get me wrong, I am concerned by this, but, if you go to Companies House, the name on the documents isn't 'The supporters of Sunderland AFC', it's Stewart Donald. I just hope everything works out well, no matter what he chooses to do.

I haven't listened to the podcast so don't have a full grasp of what he is thinking. But if he's gambling the stadium (And basically the future existence of the club) something is fundamentally wrong. If it was that easy for hotels to make cash in sunderland there would be more of them.

he didnt say anything about hotes in sunderland..he was using an example of how he can buy more asstes..not players, but assets to generate more cash. i am concerned by this and think nothing will happen...he is right that most businesses use debnt in this way..but football doiesnt work that way..

Are there any football clubs that have sold their stadium, or half of it and are reaping the rewards?

I can think of several that would much rather have maintained ownership of theirs.

sunderland arent proposing to sell their stadium or even half of it..

As long as they're reasonably priced. I've often fancied staying at the Hilton after a match with my son but it's like 100 quid a night.
I’ve stayed twice this season with my 11 year old mate. £50 both times. Booked about two months in advance. Brekkie is a tenner but it’s a serious spread and the child eats free. Filled to the gills and a couple of pastries and fruit snaffled back to the room for later with a cuppa. Nice spot. Comfy, well maintained rooms.
