We create little which is why we were always low on the XG charts. People on here were all saying the XG stat was a load of bollocks because we were an exception with Maja. Let’s see what happens without him

Thing about XG is that it doesn't take into account having quality footballers & having a quality keeper. Certainly from our perspective. Think Wimbledon are pretty high up yet they're bottom by 6 points.

I certainly believe that we are only so high because of individual ability and not because of the way Ross has the team playing.

Totally agree, we rely on moments of quality from individuals rather than a collective team performance. I worry who is going to be scoring goals for us now like.

He's a good player. Been massive for Portsmouth this year. Their striker Hawkins is a limited footballer but wins a lot of flick ons etc. They need their 3 behind to keep banging them in really. Also they're like us in which they seem to rely on their defence whereas you have a Barnsley that are really attacking.

Really attacking and have the best defence in the league.

Yeah definitely. Still think it's promising to a degree because if we kick in gear we will hammer teams. I would love to see us sign another number 10.

When I created this thread I was trying to find things like chances created etc see who was over and under performing in our team. Couldn't get that but did have a look at things like minutes on the pitch to see who's doing what. Oviedo only has 900 minutes on the pitch but is yet our 3rd top assister behind McGeady (1500jsh) & Gooch (2300 mins ish). He's had less playing time than likes of McGeough which is poor for how much we're paying him. Also our record with Matthews was fantastic & Cattermole has outscored Honeyman 3-2 whilst playing less minutes which is dissappointing really.

Interesting stats here for anyone looking at potential new strikers; ive picked afew out but full link bottom of the article

  • John Marquis top scorer with 16 (1 pen), 1 assist - 62 shots (35 on target)
  • Ian Henderson; 15 (5), 5 assists - 57 shots (34 on target)
  • Josh Maja; 15, 2 assists - 33 shots (20 on target)
  • Karlan Grant; 14 (3), 4 assists - 50 shots (29 on target)
  • James Collins; 14 (4), 3 assists - 46 shots (27 on target)
Players we are linked with
  • Kieffer Moore; 14 (1), 2 assists - 64 shots (32 on target)
  • Tom Eaves; 14, 1 assist - 57 shots (29 on target)

Other Notable players

  • Lyle Taylor; 12 (5), 7 assists - 54 shots (36 on target) - Most Assists for ST & highest shot on target %
  • Ched Evans; 11 (3), 4 assists - 33 shots (21 on target) - Same amount of shots as Josh

Highest scoring midfielders

  • James Henry - 10 goals 4 assists
  • Jamal Lowe - 1o goals 3 assists
  • Ronan Curtis - 9 goals 8 assists.

Shows what a good player Maja was & maybe how wasteful Eaves & Moore are compared to him. On average Sunderland AFC have just under 4 shots on target a game, pretty poor! Also shows how Pompey are getting it done without a real goal out and out goal scorer thanks to Curtis & Lowe (Gareth Evans also has 8 so that's their 3 behind the striker with 27 goals)

some graft went in here, appreciate it mate.

Maja goal to shot ratio really stands out here

Josh Maja was on an incredible run of form and his conversion rate has been almost unbelievable.

Unless he genuinely is a top top player he will (and likely would have) regressed toward a mean.

He kept confounding that prediction but over a very small period of time.

Maja with 75% of his shots on target resulting in goals and nearly 50% of all shots.
Amazing stats.

Which is why it simply isn’t feasible for him to keep that up forever. If he did he is genuinely a quality player and we’ve been diddled with the fee we got for him but that 10% sell on clause will be magic for us.

Yeah noticed that but still blowing teams away on the whole which is impressive. Barnsley were top of alot of the attacking markers. But like I say Wimbledon are also pretty high and are appalling, probably because they're chasing a lot of games

Scored goals against Charlton, Peterborough & Barnsley creating them by himself.

I know they're not very good but Sinclair played over 600 minutes for us upfront, scored 1, Wyke has 1 in over 400 minutes & Watmore hasn't scored in the league games where he's played upfront. Maguire has 1 in his time upfront and that was at Accrington when closing down the keeper. Gooch had 30 mins upfront against Walsall, didn't get a chance
Way more should nivver be played as a forward. His finishing is rubbish. He proved it time and time again when through one on one And hit the keeper or crowd nine times out of ten. JRs no fool he will of seen the video footage and canvassed opinions and now he’s seen the evidence first hand. Watmore will be on the wing once we get a couple of forwards in where he will do his best work.

Right if the worst happened and we didn't get a striker in (we will but just for argument sake) which of our current forwards do you stick with to get you the most goals, you can pick any of our attacking players as I would only say Wyke is a bona fide CF?

09. Has to be with a name like that. Best goals per minute after Maja....

Like Wyke, Sinclair, Fletcher and Vaughan have?
Sinclair has never been an out and out goal scorer, Vaughan didn't play in this league for us, neither did fletcher and Wyke has been fucked all season and only starting to get a few games under his belt.

The fact is the club has only had one goal scorer for the last 6 months and credit to him he has been doing it, but I've no doubt if we sign someone like grigg, he will have just as good a record

Most of Portsmouth's goals are headers or scrappy scrambles in the box. They rely on getting the ball in from the sings and using their height. I don't think they're a particularly good footballing size, but their tactics have worked up until now.
