It was a riveter from the shipyards and the picture is from 1917. The lad’s Great Grandson - also called John - wrote this on the Sunderland Antiquarian Facebook page:
He is my Great Grandfather John Cassidy I was named after him.He was 18 when the photo was taken. I believe he was the first “commoner to shake hands with the king”

Yep - he went through puberty late by all accounts due to poor nutrition - happened to lots of boy soldiers during WWI as well. Grew about another 10 inches and ended up about 4ft 6!

My grandad went into the navy aged sixteen during the First World War in 1916 and his height on enlistment was 5 foot 4. By the time he left in 1919 he was six foot four! Plenty of food, fresh air and exercise in the navy.
He was middle aged by then man.
