@yamar1 ,@Goat Eyes or other vehicular spannery types, on the sons Astra 1.7cdti 2006 it`ll charge when it feels like it, would it fuck charge the last couple of days yet i took it out tonight and suddenly went from @12.1v charging to a perfect 14v. the only thing i did was go over a bumpy road checked all battery and alternator connections and they are fine. Any ideas? Can get him a new alternator put on but its just the intermittent thats making me wonder if its something else

Intermittent electrical fault, could be a #### try the engine earth see if it is ok.

tried that one with a jump lead from - to both body and engine, no improvement. Are they just a straight foreward alternator on them or are there any electronic gizmo`s? last one i had owt to do with was a 1990 calibra and that was just a belt

Check and clean the fuses\fuse box connections. Is it the alternator with the vacc pump on the back?

Just be a straight swap. Maybee something has gone inside it, who knows as its a guessing game realy. Battery connections clean and tight? Usually when an alternator goes thats it mind.

that was the initial thought joe but didnt know if there was another underlying problem first. Dont think theyre as straightforward as they used to be

cheers. been quoted 200 sheets for fitting, plus alternator at arund 150 odd
200 fitting. i think i need to get back into it. Then again maybee not.

Pull off the connection cables/ wiring loom to the alternator.
Any bare connection rub with Emery paper or even a lasses nail file
Squirt with WD 40 and re- connect.
Should do the trick

IF NO SUCCESS.
Fire up the engine and switch on your lights.
Rev up the engine.
If lights brighten, then go with an alternator test.
You can get a battery/alternator tester for around £7 on the internet.
