Doesn't need it but presumably he trusts him to guide his decisions otherwise why have an agent at all?

I can imagine at twenty I'd have had a hard time signing something that my advisor, who supposedly has my best interests at heart, was telling me not to.

Six months ago Maja had one senior career goal to his name and outside Sunderland, nobody had heard of him. No manager had ever put him in a regular starting XI.

Fast forward to now - even though he only has 15 career goals (very modest for a 20 year old), a club that’s on course for promotion and has just broken the League One attendance record - with a manager that’s got faith in him - has offered him a 700% pay rise on the back of three good months. I’d say that was a pretty easy decision to make from a sporting perspective. In fact, I’d say it’s a pretty easy decision to make from a financial perspective as well. He need only look at his mate Asoro and his recent career trajectory. The fact he’s finding the decision anything other than easy comes down to greed. His greed, and/or the agents.

As a club, we need to be better than that now. We need to be above it. At least long enough to shake off the soft touch image that we’ve spent ten years building amongst agents and the like.

fuck him. who does he think he is? he is currently a league 1 standard striker. we are offering very good league 1 standard wages for a 20 year old, and no doubt a clause to up his wages to championship level money if we go up.

what the fuck does he want? greedy bastard. been with us since he was 16, now too good for us. heard it all before.

Would people be confident going into the championship with maja as a main striker? I don’t think I would. Remember James Vaughan scored 20 odd goals in this league a couple of seasons back.

I don’t think he’s ready for the step up yet and surely no premier league club would expect him to go straight into the 1st team. However, they could happily pay him £15k a week and stick him in the U23s. The outcome will ultimately be whether he wants to play or get rich quicker, because I think he’ll struggle to get both.
Aye i tend to agree if we go up wel need pretty much a whole new side capable of competing at championship level..

I think that is the wrong decision personally

I don't get why the deadline was set, we might win the league and he might wanna stay, he might fuck off to Cardiff

Was no need for a deadline.

Was like we can't afford to lose prize assets for nowt.....but ye knaa that eh?

It hasn’t though because Donald has stated he still wants to get him to sign a contract so it’s still going to drag on. The deadline has done nothing but make half our fans hate a player because they feel rejected in the middle of a crucial season.
The deadline, and the chain of events today now allow Donald one last chance to see if Maja wants to change his mind. If he does great, if he doesn’t we have 3 weeks to react. Without the deadline we would have treaded water till the end of the month by which time we would have no time to react. This deadline has put the ball back in our court.

Maja can do what he wants. If he doesn’t want to sign a new contract that’s fine. It’s his right not to. That doesn’t mean he’s holding the club to ransom. If he doesn’t want to be here next season he doesn’t want to be here next season.

It also doesn’t mean he isn’t taking advice from anyone, or being persuaded by anyone.

All of that may be true - but if it is, it doesn’t change the fact that he’s not the sort of player we need here. Whether his refusal to sign at a mere 700% pay rose is down to greed, ego or anything else - the whole point of this new start was that we were going to seek out players who wanted to be here, and who appreciated it.

“Right Josh. Sign a contract by Friday or else”

“Or else what?”

“I’ll continue to try and persuade you to sign a new contract”

Absolutely spot on !!

I think this may run for a while yet. It was the agent going to Sky to inform everyone including SAFC about the decision. Who knows Josh may speak to more knowledgeable people and stand up for himself. The agent only thinking of the bigger contract the bigger slice for himself......GREEDY parasitic bastards the lot of them.

If we do lose him its a big blow, but there's plenty of talent out there to be had. Don't ask who because I don't do the scouting JR and his staff do that.

We’ve set a deadline publicly though. We’ve made him declining a new contract a massive issue a day before one of the most important games of the season. Any deadline could have been done in house. To make matters worse Donald has said he will continue to try and get him to sign so nothing has changed in the respect so the deadline is worthless.

You keep clinging onto this ‘deadline’ thing like someone just killed your puppy. It’s obvious the agent has been stringing the club along with negotiations, if you can’t see that it was the clubs final straw with the agent, then it doesn’t matter what the club did, you’d back Maja first no matter what.

This. 20 year old footballers can’t be expected to navigate their way around the complicated world of professional football contracts. That’s why agents exist.

You can’t blame them for listening. Otherwise the shoe would be on the other foot and you’d have the clubs taking players for a ride. How you balance that I don’t know.

Bring the whole thing in house and make it a salaried profession rather than a profit driven one. Ban private agents/agencies and make sure there is a pool of qualified, reliable professionals available to players who have no vested interest in the deals. That would ensure the players get good advice from an impartial party but the screwing over of clubs will stop also.

Will never happen but would be the best solution and rid the game of the parasites.

Aye we definatley don’t need that sort of player that on course for 25-30 goals this season.

What were your thoughts on Defoe’s last season here?

The PFA should provide an independent service offering non-partisan advice and having no financial interest in the outcome.

not really because now we can start looking seriously for a replacement. if in the meantime he signs for us, then we stop looking. better to have all eventualities covered than to be hanging on for his decision till the last minute. and if we sign a replacement, and then he changes his mind, well tough luck.

i'm over the moon with how the club are handling this.

Always crap losing kids showing a bit of potential but what the hell, if we haven't already done so it's something we'll have to get used to in the future. Mind, if he signed and we did win promotion I doubt he'd be good enough to be a regular starter and scoring for fun in the Championship at this stage of career so we'd still be looking for a striker. Oh, and I'm sorry but I don't buy the story that he wants to stay but his agent is forcing his hand. His agent has set himself up to take the flak for him would be my guess.
