Absolutely nowt wrong with it. Takes me back to when we were stopped from "blacking up" for Hartlepool fancy dress at Carlisle as Bob Marley. Quite hideous really when the likes of Marlon Harewood (black player at hartlepool at the time) and Stan Collymore were fine with it and slammed the authorities over it. World gone mad now

Why? I’d think it was more racist to refuse to look like them because of the colour of their skin.

Whilst I agree blacking up for a looky looky man has connotations (ie the stereotype that all looky looky men are black), and should be given a wide birth. I really don’t see the problem when you aren’t mocking them for it.

This is why the whole racist and racism argument is something I’m really struggling to understand, maybe I need to educate myself by reading a lot more about what has happened In the past and why we are at were we are today in terms of racism, think I might of just found something that my interest me for once.
 
I'm either very ignorant or very stupid. .... how can 'blacking' up be racist ...surely any racist would do anything to stop from being black ?
Now if a black man 'whitened' up cos he doesn't like being black. ..that's more racist surely ?

I thought it was lucky lucky anarl ffs...
 
Why is it racist? The world has gone politically correct mad. FFS the lad was having a laugh, not decrying black people.

On another note, somebody on Radio 5 this morning asked if Teresa May was getting so much grief because she's a woman.

Fair point, just personally don't think its right to black/white up.

The argument about blacking up is with past representations of black people in that way, which often portrayed a stereotype of black people as feckless, an object of comedy, or, even worse, presented a romanticised view of plantation slavery (yes, I am talking about "The Black and White Minstrel Show"). It's quite understandable that black people will find that kind of representation offensive. Any white person choosing fancy dress which could be perceived as demeaning to black people is likely to be on thin ice.
 
To be honest, Fancy dress should be stopped

The world has gone PC mad and always leads to accusations of discrimination
