I read that. Was class. Bayliss told us how hard he's been working and how Stokes has learnt the hard way how much cricket means.

It was a close call between him and Butler. I've opted for Butler as number 2 as he's squeaky clean, a beast of a batter and probably got a higher worth in the IPL. Very close though.

Root.
Stokes.
Ali.
Buttler.

Not sure anyone else is indispensable home and away.

Yeah it was a tough list to put them all the players on and your suggestion of home and away is a valid one.

It's just I didn't want to restrict the importance rank by saying test odi t20 home and away etc. Just a pure whos got the biggest dick list.

Test:
Root (captain, first pick bat)
Anderson (first pick strike bowler in most conditions)
Ali (first pick strike bowler in subcontinent conditions)
Foakes (first pick wicket keeper)

ODI/T20:
Morgan (captain)
Rashid (first pick strike bowler in most conditions)
Buttler (wicket keeper, first pick batsman)

Root
Stokes
Ali
Anderson

I'd put these as the group of indispensibles.

I wouldn't include Buttler, Bairstow or Foakes because although they are fantastic they cover the same disciplines.
Anderson I'd include although his time is coming to a close because there's no one else, yet.

It's a sign of these times when there's no indispensable opener or swing/seamer (apart from Anderson). Despite the series win there's places open for someone to come through and make a claim.

Anderson is ranked the best bowler in the world, are people forgetting this?

Rabada took over number 1 today. But I get your point.

You must also admit though that Jimmy is in the twilight of his career and thus his importance to the setup diminishes slightly.

Ok ill give you a hypothetical question. There is a career ending injury around the corner for one player. Who would you be gutted about the most out of Jimmy Butler and Bairstow if it was one of them? Seen as you put Jimmy above them two on your list.

Root
Anderson
Stokes

And then a massive massive gap to the next one

Who is the next one?

Seconded. Anderson is possibly the best we've ever had in English conditions.

Not disagreeing AT. Love Jimmy. Just think there are more important players in the set up now.

Probably Modern

I said home and away. We've just won a series effectively without him.

Also think we can probably find a way to win with him at home too given the quality of our other seam bowlers at home.

If he were injured, I'd expect us to still win the Ashes. Root on the other hand...

The question isn't best players. It's most indispensable/important. Big difference.

If I was being brutal I would take Buttler of my list too. But I think he makes Root a better captain as VC - that's why he's in there, not because of his quality.

I can't say I agree about Anderson, his record at home is getting better and better, and I do think we would struggle to win as comfortably at home

Looking back. That's not a bad team no matter the format. Actually it looks pretty tasty.

5 seamers 3 spinners and batting all the way down to 9.

I always thought Morgan gave it up to early, he scored 2 test 100s, he was really struggling at the end but players can come back, too late now obviously

I think Roy will become an important player, and I am pretty sure he will replace Denly in the squad for the Carribean

I'd like him opening up in the Ashes, why not. I am not convinced Jennings and Burns would last the series against the Aussies anyway, just feels like thats the way the team is going, but maybe I am getting carried away.
