The infrastructure around the stadium would need massive investment to handle 50+ thousand crowds. The council seems to be doing everything possible to stop people parking near the stadium. The Don keeps talking about the Dortmund model which is a
Case of packing the crowds in at very low tickets prices. A little success and we could potentially get huge crowds as long as they keep the ticket prices to a minimum.

Any team that is successful will get huge crowds - the problem is that the Premier League is stratified and it's so difficult to compete at that level.

There was a digital model. It was on the SAFC.com site years ago.

My memory isn’t the beat but I’m sure that most of the ground was at the height of the Main stand (Premier Concourse) But either the South or north stand didn’t go quite as high as the other 3 stands.

We are getting over 30,000 in league one after 2 horrible seasons and double relegation. This is hopefully as bad as it will ever get.

Given that we have had crowds over 42,000 many times at the SOL it's not inconceivable they will rise again if we do well in the greed league.

If West Ham can get 56,000 then so could we. Just need the team to make it happen.

I was trying to figure out if it has paid for itself working on a average of 20 quid a ticket for the top tier. But I'm thick as fuck and my head hurts

I reckon we are still some way off breaking even on it.

Anyoen care to have a go?

According to my secretary who's just worked it out: since the extension was built we've housed 430,000 people we wouldn't have been able to otherwise if it wasn't built. £20 a pop means an extra £8,600,000 generated.

We are a completely different entity to West Ham. Geographical location puts us at a disadvantage to them.

We averaged over 46k twice. Other than that, we've only had a few seasons where we were averaging about 1-1.5k over the original 42k. All in all, I don't think the extension was worth it from that point of view - given the remaining 12 seasons where we have been below 42k (sometimes significantly below). Aside from the costs of building it, there's also ongoing costs. Plus the detrimental effect on the atmosphere in the stadium.

That being said, Bob mentioned the other day in the podcast that the extension was necessary in order to be able to proceed with further developments around the stadium.
That's interesting. Didn't know that. Assume he talking about stuff like the pool but why would we need to increase the capacity to do that? Where's the link?

The intent was to build out on the south stand first which have taken capacity to 55,ooo then the west stand which would have increased capacity to 63,000. Part of the logic was based around the SOL becoming a world cup venue, we'd have been guaranteed a quarter final
I always remember the score board on the artists impression Sunderland 3 A C Milan 0

Fair point. I know this has been done to death, but all that has happened is that the parking congestion has been pushed a bit further out, while perectly good parking spaces are standing empty on match days.

And how much did it cost to build?

Can't imagine the need for it anytime soon, but things change. Hopefully we get back to having the top tier open with crowds of 40k every week first.

Sure Murray said that the North Stand extension had to be done as the plans they had (Hotel and BOL) would mean planning permission wouldn't have been given had they done it the other way around.

Put a winning side together and lower the ticket prices and people will turn up.

Make the Stadium more accessible and a more attractive proposition for ‘non-hardcore’ fans and again people will turn up.

The next step would be to extend above the South Stand but at the moment we wouldn’t even sell out a 42k capacity.
The ticket prices are already very low. And to be fair it's probably why we are averaging 30k now. Nothing wrong with that of course but where I get uneasy is the amount of freebies floating around or were meant to be floating around. Should not be any.

I believe it was on the roker report podcast, he said if we didn't build the extension when we did then when the land next to the stadium was developed they would not have been able to then extend the stadium.

Totally agree, mate. Too many businesses over expand and then go to the wall! Better to have a full stadium than one with 20,000 empty seats, IMHO.

What a load of nonsense. 20,000 empty seats off 48,000 would still mean 14,000 empty seats. How's that a full stadium?

North stand wasn't the only increase in seat numbers. I used to have a seat in the back row of the East stand. While i was there, i think there was at least two, maybe three extra rows installed behind me. I know it wouldn't make much difference, maybe an extra 500-700 seats, but the intallation cost per seat for those must have been a bit less than the North stand cost per seat.
