They’re bigger than us end of..
the same way man United are bigger than man city and arsenal are bigger than Tottenham.

Of course they are. If you had this conversation in the 1980's it would be a great argument but time moves on and they have become a bigger club than us over time. Not better though as we are great and they are a bunch of tramps.

Tunstall Hills on a clear day, what a view and the hoond loves it.

At the moment* we’re in League One and they’re in the Premiership.

Historically they’re not overall, but have undoubtedly had a higher profile since the 90s. Although they’ve suffered a run of defeats to us recently. Overall there’s a fag paper between us but currently they’re two divisions above us.

*At least one club will move divisions this season.
They thought they won the relegation battle, we kicked their arse at it

Got to love this thread!

I suppose it depends on the definition of bigger.
One element I took was more well known.
I regularly go overseas for work and nearly always talk about football and in most cases have to explain there's two main clubs where I live. A lot more know of the Mags than us , despite our ten year run in the Premier League

Simply because of exposure to the Premier League via satellite TV.

Have we decided on what makes one team bigger than another?

Net spend?

Well that depends what you infer by bigger. They are certainly the most hyped club never to win anything for over 50 years. I suppose if you believe the hype it's a foregone conclusion. However if you explore the facts …

You're comparing teams who regularly win things to two teams who don't it's a silly argument. Historically their is little between us and them. I think we are bigger because we have more titles. A Newcastle fan would say they are bigger because they have more FA cup wins. The argument then would be can you compare FA cup wins to title wins. I don't think you can. All the rest is bullshit and hype, they certainly win that one.:lol::lol::lol:

It is all down to Sky and their sycophantic presenters, Keys and Grey, who were up John Hall and his Gawdee nashun rubbish. That phrase "Everyone's second favourite team" still sends shivers down the spine...

True though wasn't it? Pubs across the world full of people desperate to see Newcastle.

Rubbing shoulders with the mighty Steve, "I got them to 10th, yer nar" Bruce, the journeyman's Journyman.
And yet Bruce stands as a colossus in Sunderland history over the last 60 years with a 10th place finish.

Up until 1959, we were the only club to have never played outside of the top flight of English football. Newcastle had played Second Division, and Northern League football in that time.

We're still the 6th most successful English league club in history.
Up until 1890 Preston North End had won every league title and were most successful English league club in in history. One problem. It’s now 2018.

Did you forget about Peter Reid's two 7th placed finishes Benjie old chap. As I recall we were only 3 or 4 points above the relegation zone in Bruce's legendary 10th place finish … 6 in a row will never be beaten in mine or your lifetime Benjie …:lol::lol::lol:

And you lot have still won zip since 1955 at which point Sunderland had more league titles than any other club and don't say the invitation trophy counts
