Would imagine it would be boring as owt. Sat in a little room with a shit 20" hotel telly with nowt but SD freeview, drinking warm cans you've smuggled in your suitcase to avoid paying a fiver a pint all day and night in the bar.

Another one who just doesn't seem to understand the concept.

Honestly man it was great. You need the right hotel - clean, comfortable, great food, and the right balance of stuff put on for you to do if you want without it becoming too much like 'organised fun'. But if you've got all that (and you obviously know the hotel) then it can be a fantastic Christmas.

Really fancy it...looked at Helmsley Arms or Another Place ( Ullswater)
Apart from the expense it’s the black tie and group tables I’d not be keen on....like to keep myself to myself and the group thing puts us off a bit

I'd rather be home alone, by my elf and it won't be as deer.

Why feel bad about people working Christmas? It’s just another day and if they’re that bothered they’ll have a ‘Christmas Day’ some other time.

Never realised you could move Christmas, and also arrange your whole family to move it as well.

The whole point for Christmas for me is spending quality time with your family at a special time of the year.

I feel bad about people working Christmas Day, as they well be deprived of that special time just to serve meals etc in hotel where people can go the other 364 days of the year.

I would think everyone would be in fantastic spirit. The build is to Christmas is always great, ending with a boring as fuck Christmas Day. Presumably, it's not boring for people who aren't at home asleep in front of the telly by 4 o clock.

Having said that, I just don't know. The people on here who've never done it seem to know what they're talking about, like.

That's exactly what I'll be doing.

Went with my mum the Christmas after my brother got married. My dad died when I was young, my brother and his wife (not unreasonably) wanted to spend their first married Christmas with her parents at the other end of the country. Mum and I decided as there was just the two of us, why didn't we go away. We went to a beautiful hotel in Stratford on Avon. Arrived 24 Dec, departed 27 Dec. Christmas Eve - drinks, dinner, local carol singers came in. Christmas Day - dinner was lovely. There was entertainment in the evening - a singer and piano IIRC, very nice. Boxing Day - trip to the Royal Shakespeare Company (can't remember what we saw). Dinner again at night. 27 - home. It was great. Gave my mum a break, stopped her getting blue about the people who weren't there, and someone else did the hard yard of all the cooking and cleaning.

My hometown. Arden Manor or Welcombe?

I meant your own and extended family should have made that clear.

I’ll have worked 4 out of the last 6 Christmases this year. I always just have another day with the people I want to spend time with. Don’t really see why it has to be on a prescribed day.

It is not as easy as that though some relatives travel from far and wide and have the Christmas holidays off and don’t seem why all pubs, hotels are not closed, in fact only emergency services should be working on Christmas Day imo.

Ironic this thread popped up, we’ve never ever considered it, but after losing me dad me and me mam were just talking about what to do yesterday and it’s something we are considering. Would seem strange being away from home, but strange at home too. Not sure we could cope with lots of false/stage managed fun and games but we could take ourselves away from it.
Maybe too late to book now anyway.
