Anyhow, if you find these fruit style sours a bit sweet, I recommend you go and pick up some lambic beers.

Probably the king of all beer styles. Not ‘craft’ as they’re old, traditional Belgian beers.

They might buy their American hops in pellet or even concentrated liquid though. Rather than leaves. But there's little wrong with that.

The likes of? I don’t think there’s a comparable sized ‘craft brewery’ in this country. Maybe Beaverken will be in a few years.

And I highly doubt they do that.

Has someone heard they buy hop pellets from the states and got entirely the wrong end of the stick or something?

Nothing wrong with it at all, perfectly valid brewing approach.

Don't get tropical fruit flavoured ones then! The ones that actually taste of beer are much better - Siren Calypso's really good and Crate have a Citra Sour out at the moment. The Belgian sours are good too but tend to be more sour so harder to drink lots of. Plus Wild Beer Co do loads of weird ones.

Funnily enough i work in Paddock wood where most british Hops are stored and exported from and it was a Hop man that told me it was all shit and produced from a concentrate- the hop pellets could be the thing then.

It's all they were selling. :-) They're always the most popular stuff.

Bland but drinkable. Overly carbonated iirc.
 
Five Points' next beer is going to be a tropical IPA. Not one of their beers I don't like so looking forward to this. Still haven't got myself to their pub yet, The Pembury Tavern, need to make a visit soon.

Nice pub, it's just a refurb though and they've obviously taken over the taps.

Don't think they're a very good brewery though. Haven't enjoyed much of their stuff and the pale ale is particularly crap.

Fair do's. For me their Pale Ale is the best of the 'common' session pales that you can get on draught in most pubs in London (Neck Oil, Punk, Gamma Ray, Hepcat etc.)

Have you been to the Alma on Chapel Market, One Mile End's pub? Their 'Juicy' IPA is great. Wish they had more of a footprint then just a few pubs.

What is the fascination with fruit flavoured beers at the moment? Everytime I see something interesting looking in the supermarket it's f***ing mango flavoured or something. What's wrong with beers that taste of beer?

Their Railway Porter is good. Could leave the rest though.

No mate, its a reaction to stale, boring lagers and old-man ales.

Started in America with the use of new, different tasting hops. But now it basically means "beer made to be interesting, rather than meant to be made en-masse by the massive brewers".

Also, home-brewing can be fantastic these days.

Well then he obviously lacks quite a bit of basic knowledge on his trade if he thinks hop pellets are shit :lol:

The first beers ever produced would have been flavoured with various herbs and fruit rather than hops. There’s absolutely no reason beer should just have hops as the predominant flavour, it’s kind of the whole point of the craft beer industry - exploring all the possibilities of what beer can be.

I'm not saying they shouldn't exist, just they seem to be all that's available apart from the typical Brew Dog shite in lots of places at the moment. It only seems to have happened in the last couple of months.
