Having done extensive research on both I'd say you'd be better off going to Sicily.

Start in Palermo and go to Cefalu then head to to Taormina via Messina and fly back from Catania.

Sadly I never got to do any of the above as I couldn't get the time off but there's always next year.

Edit: ffs, hadn't realised it was an old thread.

I loved Palermo when I was there like.

And don't forget Syracusa, my favourite place on the island.

The only place I've ever seen people shooting up, in the street (back alley) and all at about 4pm in the afternoon.

Otherwise, decent city. Far from Sicily's best though.

I was really disappointed with Syracusa. I think it was because we’ve spent a ton of time in idyllic Tuscan hilltop villages and Syracuse doesn’t really offer much extra. And it’s not as pretty.

Oh wise SMB I can confirm Sardinia is absolutely magic. Am in love with the place, the Italian way, the beaches, the twisty mountain roads, the giant crisps instead of bread, the gelato, the hotness in September, the lot.
I love Sardinia, some of the best food and beaches in Europe I've experienced.
