I've been a massive fan since first hearing There She Goes. It's a classic pop song but as others have said there are other great songs on the album. The B sides are generally decent too and show some versatility (check out Who Knows or Man I'm Only Human).

I've a lot of the unreleased songs in demo/rehearsal form. I like some of them but they're not better than what's been officially released. It's a general myth that surrounded them. As someone said Mavers gets a good royalty cheque from TSG plays and had no interest in rekindling his music career.

Lost count of the amount of rumours he was about to do something over the years. He occasionally rounds up a few musicians and does some gigs for a bit of pocket money. One I went to at the Riverside was apparently to pay off some bill over merchandise! Always disappoints me seeing him more recently. I've given up going to see him, looks like he's going through the motions.

Michael Head is definitely a better songwriter. Only got into him and Shack years later like. Seen him in Liverpool and Newcastle Academy.

A bit like me then.

You weren't too late you just listened to shite first ;)

Utter shit. All scouse bands apart from the Beatles (who left Liverpool asap) are.

Lightning seeds. Shit.
Cast. Shit.
Space. Shit.
Las. Shit..

What's Finnish for fuckwit ?

OMD, echo and the bunnymen, teardrop explodes and frankie in the 80s alone.

That city has a music tradition that pisses all over ever region of the uk except Manchester. It put the entire north east to shame.
Probably the only time I'll ever agree with you
The Liverpool scene at that time was amazing

Edit - just noticed OMD - Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo on all levels

The saddest thing about Liverpool music is that apart from Frankie and Dead or Alive having 4 number ones between them in the mid-80's, The 70's and 80's were pretty barren in the higher echelons of the charts - only ex-beatles hitting the top spot between 1969 and 1989 apart from those 4

Although people think of it being a great period for Liverpool music, it wasn't massively commercially successful at the time

Better than London? Liverpool had a decent period in 60s & through scouse sentimentality has milked it ever since.

Something about scouse bands i just can't get away with as you might have guessed from my post...

I’d argue Birmingham has produced more commercially successful bands over the years, Yorkshire too (albeit that’s a bigger area). London absolutely loads more. Glasgow, loads more than Liverpool. Agree the north east is a joke, we are a cultural black hole. Sunderland’s lack of an obvious student scene is a joke.

Mostly his own fault. Too much of a perfectionist and a bit obsessed with his own "legend".

Michael Head's a way better songwriter anyway and the number 1 Scouser who should be massive...

100% this.

Always thought Mavers was a bit of a pretentious wanker. All that shite about ‘demanding his guitars were stringed in genuine 1960s strings so he could feel 60’s dirt under his finger nails’
Fuck off mate.

They made a great album but the interviews I have seen of them (mainly Mavers and power) portray them as pretentious twats. Big egos often make great music though in fairness.

The ultimate one hit wonder will be the act who had a number one and no other chart entries. I think there have been a few. The La's had a few other top 75 hits.

People would be calling them The "Lass" as in Las Vegas without it. Bad enough some people called them The L.A's
So did most one hit wonders but no one can ever name them

You could argue either way with London and Birmingham. You couldn't with glasgow though. Considering Liverpool's size its amazing what they've done though imo.

Totally agree with the north east though.

Scottish bands are mostly fuckin' shite. I'm struggling to think of a decent one.

It's shit, that

(I haven't heard the LP)
 Friggin' dreadful. Timeless Melody? Absent Melody more like.

Which ones are decent is subjective, but they have produced several highly successful bands, commercially.

Manchester has a similar population to Liverpool but has been way more influential and commercially successful. Liverpool has produced lots of critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful bands, which music snobs often latch onto imo
