Tin hat on firmly

There is a myth that he is a world class test match batsman*. This myth is partly driven by his admittedly excellent ODI form

59 tests
Average just over 37
5 tons
Conversion rate of 20% (obviously partially from batting at 7 a decent amount)

Matt Prior averaged 40 with a pretty much identical conversion rate and no one thought he was a world class batsman*

*note I’m not saying keeper-batsman

Is there such a myth? I’d class him in the same bracket as Prior, pretty much essential nowadays to have a keeper that averages a minimum of 35. We’re very lucky to have two that fulfill that criteria.

Bairstow is one of the best batsmen in the country. Alright he’s had a dip in form recently, but the test average of 37 is partly down to the poor start he had in his test career.

Also the batting lineup he has played in is far inferior to that which Prior played in. Prior was coming in at 350/5, Bairstows coming in 150/5 so his task is far harder.

Prior was a class act as well mind

Bairstow has done brilliantly in white ball cricket but hasn’t carried that form into the Test Match Arena.
Butler on the other hand has done superb in all formats.

I don't think you should have a tin hat on. Its much harder to argue that he is. I personally think he is one of our very best and most talented batsmen - he develops technical faults that I think he would rectify more quickly if he was quite simply a number 5 batsmen for England and didn't have to focus on his keeping.

If I was to pick the top 6 batsmen in England (red ball cricket) he would be one of them. Whenever he goes back for a game for Yorkshire he always seems to score a hatful. Root aside im not sure we have anyone else who would average mid 40s or above in test cricket, he seems the most likely

He doesn’t tho. And he’s played enough tests to make up for this famous “bad start”
