Donald on our January budget

When we came in, we basically did a budget that said we’d have £10m in wages and we’d probably have to spend £4m tidying up contracts, the Jack Rodwells, etc. The reality is that we actually spent zero tidying up contracts but that money is worse than that because we haven’t been able to get rid of Ndong, Djilobodji and a couple of others. So we are way, way over that. That’s bad news.

We’ll see where we go with Papy and Ndong but the rest of the squad with the players that we’ve got, I think we’ve got the wage bill down from £20m odd, excluding those two, the existing squad is down to £11m. We’ve managed to halve it and the new squad has cost about £3m to put together.

That tells you the challenge that we have because in this league £3m-4m is a decent wage and a £5m-6m budget and you’re at the top. We’ve spent that on players, the £3m-4m, but we’ve still got £11m in the existing squad, although we don’t have £11m worth of value probably.

With League One revenues, even with 30,000 fans, that’s not sustainable. We’ve had one window, so over the next couple of windows we are going to have to try and improve that but the problem is that it has left us with almost no wiggle room.

January is going to be a challenge for us because of what we’ve got in our squad.

Thought we werent paying them

He mentioned them in the podcast today. I think the tactic is to spend as little as possible of them in this league and get the ongoing budget As much in line with ongoing revenue as possible, about £20m he reckons.
He said we are currently using the parachute payments because we are above that budget.
Think there’s also an issue with cash flow timing.

I agree it's best to try to get the finances in shape to reflect what the income will be once the parachute payments are no more.

That being said, the wage bill would be loads lower by then anyway.

What did he say we were spending then on?

Rodwell agreed to a mutual termination. I think he's deluded enough to think he can still make it as a player at a higher level.

That would certainly not have come cost free - a bit like a fairly senior manager negotiating voluntary redundancy terms.

True enough, but if we don't we are for warned by the owner, this is why i like the new way of doing things better, he's telling us straight and i am happy with that.
Basic psychology mate. You can better live with the certainty of bad news than you can with no news at all.

True enough, but the fact we did not spend much in the summer, also told me that the likely hood we would be spending in January would be small having the owner confirm this chain of thought just confirmed what i already suspected.

In spite of financial constraints I think if we need to spend some money in January to get us over the line, they’ll find the money somewhere. That said, outwith of a huge injury crisis I think we have enough to get us out of this division.

You've completely lost me like. I suspect that's not down to my lack of intelligence either.
:lol::lol::lol:
You’ve been minged. Happens to me all the time. I’ve given up being puzzled by it. It’s like shit weather, it just is.

I guess we will find out when the next window opens, the idea we have enough to get us out of this division, for me that is yet to be determined, given we can't seem to keep a clean sheet.

So this statement of we can afford to let Cattermole and Oviedo stay is probably at the expense of our ability to bring in new blood !

So forget spending in January, cheers for the heads up SD

Things can change and I think things will come to a head with these two knobheads anyway. I would also imagine if we're looking like we're going to get promoted and it costs a million or so for a footballer to help cement that the people in charge might realise they need to do it to keep any kind of momentum up. there's always a loan too.

The state short had us in man, and to think the replies to als saying short was meant to be there yesterday but cancelled the replies were full of people replying saying they’d welcome him etc. Fuck off that kernt almost killed us man, the club has been left in a mess worse than even the biggest short critics didn’t think of.

Look at clubs like villa, they’ve spent a fair amount have players on loan that cost £30 m so wages must be unreal. You need a big budget to really compete at the top end of the Championship, yes you’ll get the odd club that strikes it lucky threw good scouting and academy players, but for the most part you need a fair amount of money.
We were in a much worse state when Draumaville left us.

It’s what we all knew anyway, if we manage to get rid of them two it’ll free up some cash. They’re ***** so it’s not looking likely anytime soon, just have to hope the squad is good enough. Hopefully McGeady and Watmore will add some more cutting edge.

This.
And quite right too. No point even starting to spend until we've got to ground zero.

Surely though there's the here and now to consider too though. I'm not saying spend beyond means (we should have two years of Parachute payments to help us through this, but these are seemingly tied to Short) but if we show a disregard for the first team squad (which we haven't done anyway) then we're in the same territory of Bain and Short.

Ndong will be sold ( hopefully to a Portuguese team) or at Xmas . Oviedo will go at Xmas. Papy will be sued and sacked. And no fucker would be daft enough to buy Cattermole. We will be stuck with that useless bastard.
