Ed Smith and his choices

with Cook retiring, it feels like the end of the summer in all but name

So how do we think Smith has done? Limiting to those he has brought in specifically

Jennings - dreadful. I don’t see it. A single good season for Durham

Vince - ok he didn’t play but was called up. Fuck off

Buttler - as you all know I disagreed with it for 2 reasons. Lack of red ball cricket and ability in the longer form. He has proved me wrong. I still don’t believe in having a specialist batsman at 7, but he has played very well.

Rashid - not trusted by his captain. A dreadful selection

Curran - looks an international player, albeit may struggle on roads overseas. Inspired

Ali - excellent also. Needed time out

Porter - deservedly made the squad. Wonder if he plays at the Oval?

Woakes - play every game at lords. Open the batting and bowling with him

Pope - no issues for me with selecting him. But should never be batting 4. Has class, will come good

6/10 is my overall assessment

Today is the best day he’s had all summer. A stay of execution for the winter but living on borrowed time. Colours to the mast, not up to it.

In general I’d agree but with his recent form, his home ground and Bairstow’s injury he’d have batted 3 in the last Test for me. A missed opportunity for him and for Smith.

Don’t agree with a specialist batsman at 7 either, but given the embarrassment of riches in the all rounder department it’s not been straightforward getting him in the side, so I’m prepared to give the selectors the benefit of the doubt on that. He should have been in the side all along of course, as we all know now :) Whether he keeps the gloves at 7 or plays as a batsman at 5 should now be the question. I’m happy with it either way round between him and JB tbh, form and fitness permitting.

Rashid - not trusted by his captain. A dreadful selection
Disagree. Brave selection which paid off to some degree by getting the most out of Moeen in the series decider is another way of looking at it but in truth he’s not had conditions to suit all summer, or runs on the board.

Curran - looks an international player, albeit may struggle on roads overseas. Inspired
Agreed.

Ali - excellent also. Needed time out
Agreed again.

Porter - deservedly made the squad. Wonder if he plays at the Oval?
Probably not.

Woakes - play every game at lords. Open the batting and bowling with him
Lol.

On a serious note, fitness issues are a concern.

Pope - no issues for me with selecting him. But should never be batting 4. Has class, will come good
Don’t see it personally, yet. No room for him lower than 4, Root wants to bat 4 and he’s not a top 3 batsman, so where does he fit in?

6/10 is my overall assessment

6/10 is on the low side imo. Between a 7 and an 8 for me.

Jennings - no idea why he was given a second chance.
Vince - NO!
Buttler - can change a game so I'd always look to try and get him in the team.
Rashid - the best leg spinner we have so should be included in tours to the subcontinent/WI.
Curran - a year early for me but what a start the young lad has made.
Ali - oozes class.
Porter - first time I saw him, I was impressed by his skill. As good as Rushy at his best.
Woakes - proven already.
Pope - we'll see.
Some inspired choices but going back to Jennings and Vince makes you wonder what is coming next.

Jennings - cupboard bare had showed glimpses earlier in season but probably time to move on from him. 6/10

Vince
- Looks the part but until he learns the art of a good leave he’ll remain a county circuit man. 5/10

Buttler
- No brainer and hopefully shows the red ball snobs that freakish talent should be given its head. Give him gloves, bat 7 and tell Bairstow to pick his lip up. 9/10

Rashid
- No issue with selection as again cupboard was pretty bare. Out bowled by Ali though. I’d still take him on winter tour. 6/10

Curran
- Still don’t see him as a frontline test match bowler but has more than contributed this series. Very good selection. 9/10

Ali
- Great call to bring him back. 9/10

Porter
- know nothing about him as of yet. 5/10

Woakes
- Made of marzipan but again you n home conditions excelled. 7/10

Pope -
Thought he looked useful and I’d have kept patience for rest of series. 6/10

Don’t think the blokes done bad personally as he isn’t exactly spoilt for choice.

Don’t fancy us on tour but this has been a good series and very good win.

Rashid was 1/10 and Woakes a 10. Otherwise pretty much spot on.

Jennings - can see why he was recalled, although has been the abject failure we expected him to be.

Vince - again, can see the merit in the selection. Can't tell a player to go away and score runs in County Cricket, and ignore them when they do.

Buttler - fair enough, has done well - but still disagree with the selection, and having a "specialist" batsman at 7 is absurd.

Rashid - I get the arguments about disrespecting County cricket, but totally agreed with him being called up. unfortunately, its becoming apparent that he just doesn't have it in him to transfer white ball success to red ball.

Curran - Not sure how much credit for him should go to Smith, given he was in the squad for the Aus T20s - but has been absolutely inspired, man of the series for me. Not that im surprised!

Woakes - excellent player in English conditions. An obvious call up.

Porter - okay he hasnt played, but shows there is merit in the County game, and if you do well, you get your chance.

Pope - take out the Surrey thing - exactly the sort of call up I think England should be making. It was just idiocy to have him batting at 4.

5/10 this'll go down to a 2 if Rory Burns isnt playing at the Oval.

5/10? You’re entire post supports all of his selections.

Had the foresight, intelligence and eye for talent, to pick Buttler despite what some figures shown, and was brave enough to go with it.

That's a good sign for me, if everything was just on averages etc, would not need selectors.

Spot on with regards to Buttler

And the rest?

Jennings is and will never be good enough soo spot on there.

Then again who else is they?

Buttler should be keeping now and batting at 7, don't give two fucks that Bairstow prefers to keep.

He would say that central contracts are a lot of money and staying keeping means if he suffers a bad run of form would stay in the side.

Ok. And the rest?

The point of the thread is to judge his successes and failures, not debate the Buttler thing again
