2019 Recruitment

It's not just Coughlin, it's all the younger players. Would genuinely love to know when will be the right time, as some of them I watched earlier in the season mucked in well and we won the game.

The 1st XI are massively under achieving this season. Will Smith has only been dropped because of this Indian.
It can't be all the younger players.

Potts injured. That's a shame because he was going well.
Trevaskis, ill, maybe on the point of recovery.
Whitehead, a leggie - I'd be interested in seeing him and he looked very good bowling in the T20, but 4 day cricket is different. How is his batting cos he'll need it
Scot Steel, it looks like he's on the verge.

I'm with Brandon on this. I want to see these players in - but, not too many at once and I'll follow the coaches opinion on when they're ready. Too soon maybe worse than too late.

Durham have a brilliant history of bringing young players in when they are ready. Bringing too many in too soon can have a detrimental effect on the players and the team. Was at Glamorgan last week and they have a team full of young players who they hope will develop. Problem is they are getting hammered every game. Spoke with Steve Watkins there 2nd team coach for a while and he was clear they have to be ready before they are brought in.
It was great to see Josh Coughlin bowling to Alan Walker during the breaks in the game out on the square. One to one coaching whenever possible.

Seriously, for someone who clearly watches Durham quite a lot, you seem so poorly informed.

Aside from McCarthy, who’s playing today and Coughlin who we’ve discussed, which of the younger players are actually fit and able to play NOW?

Bri alluded to the fact that some are injured, the way you go on you’d think we had half a dozen young lads being kept out of the side by old heads - that is simply not the case because they cannot stay fit.

Put your agenda to one side if that’s at all possible and acknowledge that we’ve got some exciting young talent who we will hopefully see in the side very soon, HOWEVER for now, the club and coaches can do no more than they already are doing with regards to giving them chances.

very little crack around the ground today about who is out at the end of the season, although the Colly last hurrah appears to be going around without any real substance.

Marty said that McCarthy has put his 28 day notice out … which I think means that he's at the end of his contract. And he wants to play more.
He also said that if Ireland pick him (or renew his contract I didn't quite follow) he'd then be considered an overseas player and given if counties have cash for overseas he'd be competing against some of the best from SA, NZ, Aus etc.

So given I'm not sure of the rules would his option be either - sign for a County but not for Ireland and therefore find a gig. Or, sign for Ireland and risk not signing for a County and look for a contract with one of Ireland's 4(?) first class clubs.

I think this is all to do with Ireland gaining Test status.

And Lewis also has to think whether he wants to offer a contract - which I think he should all things being equal.

The Ireland thing confuses me. Would e.g. Boyd Rankin, being born in Northern Ireland, not be considered an overseas player in England but players born in the Republic would be overseas players?

It's no agenda at all. I just want to see folk involved based on performance.

Don't blame McCarthy for wanting to leave. Good luck to him

in all seriousness, who from the second team would you like to see playing? i really havent followed the seconds as much this year, i know they've done well but not really sure who are the leading lights and in what positions they play.

Whitehead, Trevaskis, Davies, Jones, Coughlin, Steel. Got to be something about them if the 2nd xi have made finals day and finals this season. The first two i mention done very well in the recent T20 campaign. Lewis makes his decisions which is fair enough I'll continue to support the team as I will be tomorrow but I don't agree with his team selection and haven't for the majority of the red ball season. I strongly believe this is a great time to make some changes. When some of these lads were "thrown in" earlier in the season, we won. Let them loose i say.

Whitehead and Trevaskis should play in every limited overs match next year and 1 of them in the CC (both if Trevaskis proves himself with the bat). I've high hopes for young Steel.

We're getting beat most weeks as well.....

1 game!!!! Which we won. Some of the regulars haven't contributed all season and still get picked

So on the flip side of recruitment, who should we be dispensing of?

Or perhaps who may leave?

I think Richardson’s time is up, he’s had far too many chances.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we dispense also with a bowler or two - especially one of those who’ve made the treatment table their home.

Interesting to see what happens with McCarthy too, because the Ireland situation is an odd one and if we can’t play him as a local, there’s no way he’s getting an ‘overseas’ role anywhere.
