You spent about £40m to get promoted man. Don’t give me this utter bollocks about net spend, because yes you made money off players who you still spent £40m to replace them!!

That is not being ‘shockingly backed’.

Ashley could have quite easily done a Short and pulled off funding. He didn’t, he gambled and spent big to get promoted. Rafa spent that money on average players who nobody now wants to take, probably because of their higher wages. This is hindering things now.

People did say at the time that spending big money on the likes of Clark, Gayle and Ritchie is all well and good to get you promoted, but when these players are sitting on lucrative deals and Rafa wants an upgrade, what happens then??

But aye, net spend and all that shit that goes with it!

One of the biggest factors that no one really seems to mention is wages.

It's not so much the fact that Benitez spent so much to get them promoted it's the amount they paid in wages to do it. They bang on about net spend but where do they think the wages come from?

I saw some figures that showed during the promotion season they had something like the seventh biggest wage bill in the country. There was a post on this thread showing wages were at 90 odd percent, that's absolutely mental and that's where the money is going.

So when they whine on that Brighton, Huddersfield, Fulham. Cardiff et al are spending more than them, it's because they were promoted by none world class managers who did it on a much much smaller budget meaning when they did go up, there was a lot more of the 100m or whatever amount to spend on the squad, whereas the mags money is eaten up my an unmanageable wage amount which is largely to do with Bentitez spending to get them out of the championship.

Not one mag I've ever spoken to seems to acknowledge or understand this. I wonder why?

So you agree he's not as good as Mourinho?

Inherited teams at Liverpool and Valencia.
Was very very lucky against ac milan.
Got his tactics/team selection all wrong in the first half and only changed because of injuries,

Relegated with the mags, bought his way out, whinges like a split arse.

Rafa has sympathy for NUFC fans

"Rafa Benitez was asked about planned protests against Mike Ashley ahead of Chelsea game. He said he has “a lot of sympathy” for NUFC fans"

60m spend in champo, only player they sold who was a miss was townsend

46m the next season-again only deadbeats and cast offs sold.

23m this summer, improved on the players they had, but id argue after a good finish why not spend another 30-40 to get the place jumping if they can get a couple good players in?

we lost great chances to kick on in both Januarys when we finished 7th having been in top 2, and also under o neil in that jan when we had a great run we got the greek and wayne bridge in and it petered out- then we end up spending more 'firefighting' than we would have if we spend on the back of a good run.

they have done it too-overall have always spent a lot of money I think, but why not after the 5th place finish and this summer?

As much as I hate the mags. Key's and Gray are a right pair of muppets.

Some of the comments are funny as fuck tho.

I actually find the Keys/Gray stick worse than the Rafa antics because it’s indicative of the way owners can manipulate media for false information - Ashley has clearly had a word with them to be their spin doctors. Allardyce was doing the same - I’ve heard a rumour he might be going back there next season...

Huddersfield had only spent 5m after nearly going down and had a lot more to do squad wise once in the prem, where Newcastle had established premier players anyway so ive never got the 'we cant compete with huddersfield' toon argument

When Ashley eventually sells up and makes a huge profit the deluded Mags with say the fans forced him out even though that is complete bollocks as Ashley will only go on his terms.
