I don't think he can be considered given the current state of the trial. Could be Friday or longer before there is a verdict, also what will his state of mind be? Go again with same squad imho

They haven't ruled out Ben Stokes being added to the squad according to Sky Sports. Depends on the verdict and they will assess him after the trial.

If he was picked to play, who would they leave out? Rashid did not do much in the 2nd test but I can't see us starting without a spinner.

Root and Stokes can bowl occasional off spin

If anyone missed out I suspect it would be Buttler TBF
 
Before the Series it was said they'd manage Broad and Anderson through the series. If they do I think it'll be Broad this Test and Anderson the next. Broad bowled well in the last innings but he's not head and shoulders above the rest like Anderson so they'll hope the series is dead before resting him.

The Batting needs all the help it can get anyway.

Be very harsh on Curran. Personally I'd keep the same team and give Stokes a little dig in the ribs to remind him he's not indispensable. No ban, no sanctions just a wee reminder that he has to earn the right to play for England and if he gives up his shirt for non cricketing reasons he can't expect to walk back into the side.

Iirc Didn't Darren Lehman go a few years between caps because he couldn't break back into the team?

This isn't a formal punishment or anything daft like that. The ECB should let him off anything like that - the Ashes was punishment enough.

But this is sporting justice. It's very simple: if you miss a test, especially if its for something like that rather than something more innocent like injury, then there has to be a clear reason why you should come back in. If everyone plays out of their skin and you win handsomely - that's the risk you take, that's sport. Whoever you are - even (and he is) if you are England's best player on your day.

Like you say - Curran was man of the match in the first test. Stokes made a massive contribution, but Curran turned the game. We would probably have lost without Stokes's contribution, but we would definitely have lost without Curran's.

Then, obviously, no we are not dropping the only Englishman to get a ton in the series so far.

No, obviously we are not dropping (educated guess) England's two leading wicket-takers at this venue. Broad at his home ground - don't be ridiculous. Anderson and Broad are better bowlers than Stokes - no need to debate that one, sorry.

Therefore, it has to be one of Woakes or Curran and neither deserve it. We just smashed India. Sporting justice says - sorry Ben, you'll get another chance very soon, but for now - you wait. Nobody is an automatic selection (except the captain) - it's a good message to send. Dropping a 20 year old who has played out of his skin? That is a very bad message to send.

I mean, if push came to shove I'd definitely be open to dropping Buttler - but that's a different debate, probably. And we don't need five seamers.

Agreed, 100%.

Same team, it’s reward for the lads who did so well last time out and also a notice to everyone that you can’t just get back in the side because of who you are. Especially when it’s for things such as this with Stokes. Injuries, fair enough I suppose. But as said above, a little gentle reminder to Stokes, and anyone else for that matter, that places are earned

I agree with both and kenwyn … but also I don't know where Stokes' mind will be right now given he's been through a stressful time. Don't pick him for England but do let him ease back in in the upcoming 4 dayer for Durham.

I'm sorry mate. But we really need to avoid falling in old habits. Even though Rash did pick up the TFTU award. A true top test team imo needs a proper spinner in the 11.

Stokes should play. But it's woakes or Curran that needs to be dropped. Harsh but has to be done. Unless we tell stokes to have a breather.

Not a bad shout. We have to start to wean off the two eventually. Top players that they are.
