Judge RInder

He came across as a really nice and genuine bloke and the story of his grandfather who escaped death by a whisker while the rest of his family perished was very moving. The other side of his family's story (great grandfather?) was hardly less traumatic so the fact that he exists at all hangs on a hair's breadth. The thing I like about these WDYTYA programmes is the insight you get into people's characters that you thought you knew and can often change your view of a person. The other thing that strikes me, as a person and as an amateur genealogist is how good we have it compared to only a few generations ago. I have no stories like Judge Rinder's about the holocaust but not very far back I have ancestors from mining and agricultural backgrounds suffering extreme poverty and in quite a few cases spending terms in and out of the workhouse. I'm not saying 'you've never had it so good' and life is still shit for a lot of people but those of us who are relatively comfortable need to reflect on that in my view.

On again now. I’m watching it. Very moving stuff. I went to Auschwitz last December, it really does make you stop and think.

Scary & depressing in equal measure how many parallels to those days we are seeing again.
