He's got the County stats for it and appears to be in good form ….. also he's used to playing long innings …. the downside is he's 34 and hasn't been capped even once. Maybe they don't rate him for some reason.
But, yknow, we don't produce our own...True but the most fashionable county of them all, Surrey, are producing some quality players and could conceivably provide half the England side in the not too distant future. Pope, two Currans, Virdi, Burns, Foakes possibly. Plus Roy in the one day stuff.
You clearly do so why poach from other counties? But, yknow, we don't produce our own...
Ha! I love this. You clearly do so why poach from other counties?
And I would say that this, along with a couple of astute signings, overseas (Morkel) and Foakes, Stoneman, Borthwick (domestic), is exactly why you're running away with the Championship. Can't remember the last time any hotch potch team of "poached" players and overseas/Kolpaks won the CC. Possibly Middlesex 2016 but they'd been building for a couple of years prior.Ha! I love this.
To my (extensive) knowledge, we have "poached" (or more accurately, signed) three players from other counties - four if you including re-signing Rikki Clarke, in which we exchanged one academy graduate for another.
Those three players:
Ben Foakes - who realised he wasn't going to displace the club captain and legend James Foster behind the sticks at Essex, and we needed a WK to replace Steven Davies. So not exactly a player we "poached", and its not exactly like he signed for an improved wage.
Borthwick and Stoneman both wanted to play Div 1 cricket in a bid to play for England - and in one case, that was successful. Both wanted to work with a coach they knew well.
And before the inevitable Morne Morkel stuff is thrown around - to all intents and purposes, he has replaced Sanga.
We have played, and convincingly won, CC games this year in which we have played NINE academy graduates.
But, sure - all we do is poach other counties best players!
I knew you would bite. Surrey generate sufficient income to sign almost anyone they like. Furthermore they themselves proposed that generous compensation be paid to counties from whom they sign the player. No problem with that all; any player is fully entitled to seek the best deal that's offered.Ha! I love this.

Who else have they hoovered up then? 3 doesn’t seem excessive?I knew you would bite. Surrey generate sufficient income to sign almost anyone they like. It's this denial that they hoover up the best that irritates me.

Had forgotten that.Liam Plunkett most recently.
To be fair, even Middlesex had the likes of Compton, Finn and Malan who'd been. But totally, if we win the Championship this year, the main factor is the core of the side having come through the system! And I would say that this, along with a couple of astute signings, overseas (Morkel) and Foakes, Stoneman, Borthwick (domestic), is exactly why you're running away with the Championship. Not a bite at all. It's merely that the lazy "all they do is hoover up the best County players" line that gets thrown around is so laced with ignorance that it becomes rather irksome.I knew you would bite. We are hamstrung by the same wage cap as the rest of the counties - one could argue moreso, as your wages would go further in Manchester, or Leeds than they would in London.
It isn't a denial, it's mere facts that are easily looked up; it's just an incredibly lazy load of tripe to throw out.
I'd totally forgotten about Plunkett signing! So four signings in four years. Hardly "hoovering up players", is it? Besides which, I'd argue he's cover for when the Currans are with England, but anyway...
Not biting to you![]()
